Ranveer Singh will play the role of legendary Indian all-rounder Kapil Dev in the cricketers’ biopic titled, ’83’.
A special event was recently organized where former cricketers from the 1983 world cup winning squad – Kapil Dev, Mohinder Amarnath, Krishnamachari Srikkanth, Bishan Singh Bedi, Sandeep Patil, Dilip Vengsarkar, Yashpal Sharma and Madan Lal were in attendance. Ranveer Singh and director Kabir Khan represented the film crew at the evnt.
An ecstatic Ranveer Singh later shared pictures from the event on Instagram.
In the 1983 world cup, no one expected team India to win the world cup. The movie 83 is the story of Team India leading up to the historic day when they picked up the World Cup trophy at England’s Lords Stadium on 25 June 1983 – “The day when India turned the world upside down.”
Kapil Dev says Ranveer Singh’s film is not about him, its about the 1983 World Cup
It seems everybody in Bollywood is rushing to make biopics on Indian sports-persons. Few days back it was all over the news that Ranveer Singh will be doing a biopic on legendary Indian cricketer Kapil Dev, to be directed by Kabir Khan.
However, it seems the movie is not exactly a biopic on Kapil Dev, and this comes straight from the horses mouth.
“First of all, it is not a film on me. So it is not my bio-pic. It is apparently a film on the 1983 World Cup. Not about me,” says the legendary cricketer.
But wasn’t he an integral part of the 1983 World Cup (and also the captain)?
“I was!” says Kapil Paaji, but he says the world cup was also about Sunil Gavaskar, Mohinder Amarnath and other Indian cricketers.
“So the film has to be about them as well.”

And what does he feel about Ranveer Singh, who will be playing Kapil Dev in the film?
“I’ve no idea about that. All I know is that they’re making a film on the 1983 World Cup. I repeat, it’s not about me. And we’ve all been invited to be there in Mumbai for the formal announcement on 27 September. So I guess all of us will be there.”
We will keep you updated on this one.
When Madan Lal convinced captain Kapil Dev to give him the ball, and dismissed Vivian Richards in the 1983 World Cup Final
“Before that particular over, two-three fours were hit off Madan Lal. So I went to Madan asked him to take a break and comeback after a few overs. To which Madan said ‘Kapsi (that’s how his teammates called him), you give me the ball. I have earlier dismissed Vivian Richards, I can do it once more’. When a player is so confident, even though I was not too keen, I thought, let him bowl another over. They say, some things just happen for you and this happened with us. Lal took Vivian Richards’ wicket in the same over and the the rest is history,” recalled Kapil.
