Now that ‘Mardaani’ is being acknowledges as a good film, and good word-of-mouth is helping send more people to the theatres, Rani Mukherjee is an elated person. Many had written her-off and not many were expecting the movie to do well. The fact that the movie survived despite an ‘Adults Only’ certificate and competition from Rohit Shetty’s ‘Singham Returns, means the movie has been accepted well by the audience.
Mardaani is an intense police drama and it tackles the sensitive subject of trafficking, wherein Rani plays the role of a police officer. With the movie getting a tax-free status, its expected to do better in the coming days.
However, despite the success, the movie has had its share of controversies.
Mardaani shouldn’t be shown to police officers
Top bosses of Bihar police were quite impressed with the movie and had instructed that the movie “Mardaani” should be shown to all police officers, as they were quite impressed with Rani Mukherjee’s role in the movie (she plays a cop).
However, the Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative (CHRI) believes that it shouldn’t be shown to police officers because the style of policing in the film promotes “violent” and “encounter-style” policing in the name of “efficiency”.
CHRI says that “Criminals must be brought to justice through legal and responsible policing, else we risk losing the distinction between criminals and the police service.”
Aamir Khan feels Mardaani not suitable for chilren
Back on the success of the film, Rani wanted to send the film to the Censor Board for re-certification so that children above 12 years could watch the film. However, Aamir Khan doesn’t see the merit in it; in fact he thinks that Mardaani is not suitable for children at all.
Aamir Khan (was paired with Rani Mukherjee in the famous ‘Aati kya khandala’ song) said he respected Rani’s decision, but firmly believes that children should not be exposed to violence and adult content through films.
