After the stupendous success of Prabhas / SS Rajamouli’s magnum opus, Baahubali, Prabhas has featured in Saaho, the Hindi-Tamil-Telugu trilingual, one of the biggest action movies produced in India.
This time Prabhas wears a cool, urban look and romances Shraddha Kapoor. The movie has been shot in Hyderabad, Mumbai, Abu Dhabi and Bucharest (capital city of Romania).
French director accuses Saaho makers of plagiarism
French director, Jérôme Salle, feels Saaho makers have copied his film Largo Winch that released in 2008. He initially tweeted, “I think I have a promising career in India”; however many could not spot the sarcasm in his tweet, so he posted another tweet “It seems this second “freemake” of Largo Winch is as bad as the first one. So please Telugu directors, if you steal my work, at least do it properly? And as my “Indian career” tweet was of course ironic, I’m sorry but I’m not gonna be able to help.”

The IMDb synopsis of Largo Winch read, “After a powerful billionaire is murdered, his secret adoptive son must race to prove his legitimacy, find his father’s killers and stop them from taking over his financial empire.” Saaho fans defended the movie by saying such kind of stories are common in Indian films. “A secret son and revenge is less a plot and more a trope. Please watch the movie. I didn’t see any parallels between your movie and Saaho. Also, the movie was not bad. It was a good action movie that could’ve done with better editing,” said one tweet.
Among the most expensive Indian films
Prabhas and Shraddha Kapoor starrer Saaho is one of the most expensive films of Indian cinema and is reportedly made at a budget of Rs 350 crore.
According to a report in Mid-Day, Prabhas charged a whopping Rs 30 crore for Saaho (much more than what the top Bollywood stars command). For Baahubali 2, he had charged around Rs 20-25 crore.
There were rumours that Shraddha Kapoor had demanded INR 7 crores for the movie, which is far more than what Katrina had demanded for the film. However, insiders say that those rumours are false and were done to damage her image in the industry. In reality, Shraddha Kapoor charged close to INR 3 crores for doing Saaho.
“Made my first short film when I was 17 years old. No money, No team but had lot of support from Orkut and family. I edited, shot and directed 90% of my short films. I learned from my mistakes and criticism was always like extra boost for my journey. Travelled very long way and faced many hurdles but never gave up. Today many people saw SAAHO – some expected more from it, but many loved it! Thanks to all for watching the movie 🙂 Please watch it again if you missed anything. I am sure you’ll enjoy even more. #Saaho,” director Sujeeth’s post on social media thanking the fans for watching Saaho.
Review
Saaho has superb action but has a weak and confusing script. After a fantastic opening (due to the buzz), the collections should come down drastically.
Marketed as a film with mind-blasting action sequences, this film has several scenes where things don’t make sense.
A fight sequence set in a Mumbai chawl features an ostrich and a python. A battle tank to flatten vehicles in a love song.
Not sure what the director was thinking? (the money could have neem spent better)
Prabhas is good but he alone cannot lift the film (though there are several scenes where his fans cheer his actions). The charisma between Prabhas and Shraddha also is just about okay.
But on the whole, SAAHO comes across as a boring film.

Saaho, which stars Prabhas in his first screen outing since the Baahubali films, took almost two years to complete, cost roughly Rs 350 crores to make, clocks in at nearly three hours, and leaves you with the kind of pounding headache that’ll take the better part of the day to recover from. At one point in the film Chunky Pandey, who plays a nostril-flaring crime boss named Devraj, threatens someone, saying, “I will put you through a lot of pain.” He might as well be speaking to the audience.

Saaho: UNBEARABLE. A colossal waste of talent, big money and opportunity… Weak story, confusing screenplay and amateur direction.

I know that a popcorn entertainer like Saaho isn’t driven by logic or coherence. And I would have made my peace with it if the film delivered a good time. My biggest complaint is that it’s a crashing bore. A lot of hard work has gone into creating the action and the extravagant sets. The budget is a reported 350 crores but for the viewer there’s little bang for the buck. I got through it by getting involved with the peripherals – like the many, muscled henchmen who had fascinating haircuts and tattoos. They all growled and glared into the camera. And it was a noticeably international team. In one scene, we meet baddies called the Franco Brothers. Their introduction is – inko darr hi nahin lagta. Animals also appear randomly – an ostrich, a python and a panther. It’s superbly nutty. There so much on screen and so little that sticks. I hope the next time Prabhas decides to dedicate years of his life to a project, it’s closer to Baahubali than this.

Saaho may, like so many other shrill, gory actioners of the recent past, end up make pots of money. But that will not take away from the fact that it is egregiously turgid. A Telugu superstar attempting to break into Hindi cinema should have chosen better.

Saaho starts with the promise of a slick, high-octane actioner. Impossibly high sky-scrapers, all gilt-edged. A bunch of extremely international baddies, all togged out in designer black. Villains-in-swanky dens, swish molls, cops-in-plain-clothes-and-uniforms, bad guys who may be good, good guys who may, gasp, be very bad indeed, all in search of a huge stash of money. And helmed by Prabhas, who strode across the gigantic Baahubali canvas, cleaving a path to mythic victory.Everything a thriller needs is in here. You settle down to a non-stop, breathless, firing-from-all-cylinders ride. But Saaho turns out to be a damp squib

‘Saaho’ surely delivers well as an action extravaganza with an adrenaline pumping climax. The film’s second half picks pace, but is marred by a weak narrative that requires constant suspension of disbelief. Also, the special effects and CGI often lack the finesse that a film mounted on such a grand scale deserved. Overall, ‘Saaho’ is quite the potboiler that fires in all directions in an attempt to entertain the audience. But with a weak storyline, too many twists and juvenile execution, it ends up being a missed opportunity.

Shraddha Kapoor to be paired opposite Prabhas in Saaho, her biggest movie till date
After searching for months, the makers of Saaho have finally confirmed Shraddha Kapoor as the leading lady in Saaho.
“Shraddha is absolutely the perfect choice for the role. We are very excited to have her on board with us,” said the producers, after Prabhas fans seemed disappointed with the choice of Shraddha.
Happy to announce the leading lady of Saaho, The beautiful @ShraddhaKapoor it is. Here’s welcoming her to #Saaho family. #UVCreations pic.twitter.com/mYUAHQa23a

This will be Shraddha Kapoor’s biggest film till date.
Initially, Katrina Kaif’s name was considered but for some reason, she did not sign the film.
Then Anushka Shetty was considered for the action film, but buzz is that, despite training hard (to lose weight) for the film, the actress was 5-8 kilos overweight, because of which the makers did not sign her.
