The success of Grand Masti (earned over 100 crores in India) encouraged other film makers to venture into the adult comedy genre, and with a couple of more sex comedies lined up for release (Kyaa Kool Hain Hum 3 & Mastizaade), it seems sex comedies are here to stay in Bollywood, and its only getting bolder.
Just a few months back, the Indian censor board had objected to the lengthy kissing scenes in Bond movie ‘Spectre’, however they seem to be okay with ‘Kyaa Kool Hain Hum 3’.
The makers if the film had first released the trailer of their movie on several ‘adult sites’. Yes, they did that! Thy started promoting the movie on several x-rated sites long before the general public could see it on YouTube.
In fact, for some scenes that were filmed in Bangkok, they even hired real adult-stars, for the scenes that required more artistes.
The film stars Tusshar Kapoor, Aftab Shivdasani (who play the role of porn stars in the movie), and Bigg Boss 9 contestant Mandana Karimi.
Its Business After All
When Chennai Express (CE) overtook 3-Idiots as the highest grossing Bollywood film ever, there were many who thought CE was nowhere close to 3-Idiots in terms of content (arguably among the best Indian films ever made.)
But then, what do you say when a movie like ‘Grand Masti’ collects 40 Crore in the opening weekend, and goes onto make well over 100 crores? With its grand success, the myth that adult comedies don’t do well with the Indian audience also has been broken.
On one hand, Bollywood films are indeed a great influence on the general public. However, on the other hand, at the end of the day, its also a business.
Here’s what was written/said about ‘Grand Masti’ after it was released:
- There were many who called it an extremely ‘vulgar’ movie.
- The UAE censor board was going to have a look at it again, to see whether it was fit for release for the UAE audience.
- There were several negative things said about the movie
- The movie also has an adult rating from the censors.
Despite all that, sex comedy Grand Masti turned out to be one of the biggest box office money-spinners of the year.
After a pretty good Rs 40 Crore weekend, the weekday numbers were best for 2013, only behind Shahrukh Khan’s Chennai Express and Ranbir Kapoor’s Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani.
And the surprising thing is that “Grand Masti” doesn’t boast of any big star (it stars Vivek Oberoi, Aftab Shivdasani and Riteish Deshmukh)! So clearly, the movie has worked purely based on its content!
The sex comedy has worked, in a big way, with the Indian audience, and has beaten all trade projections.
Why It Did So Well At The Box-Office?
Obviously, the questions asked were “Who’s Watching It?” and “Why the Film is Doing So Well?”.
The answer is simple — the masses (not the ‘class’) & youngsters enjoy this kind of stuff. The double meaning dialogues and the skin show in the movies are something which the audience seems to love.
Maybe not everybody is going to accept that logic, at least in the open, since ours is also more of a “double-standard” society.
But that seems to be the fact!
Even the actors of Grand Masti were seen promoting the movie only in colleges and single screen halls!
Risque Seems to Be Acceptable
Looking at the box-office collections, Indian audience certainly seems to be in the mood to accept sex comedies.
What Ekta Kapoor started with ‘Kyaa Super Kool Hain Hum’, Indra Kumar has done it a lot better with ‘Grand Masti’. The sex quotient was raised a lot higher in ‘Grand Masti’ and they still managed to pull off a box office winner.

One of the more popular comedy movies from the eighties is ‘Shaukeen’ (released in 1982). The movie has 3 ‘shaukeen’ old men (Ashok Kumar, Utpal Dutt and A.K. Hangal) who decide to have some fun in their old age before death arrives, something that they couldn’t do in their younger days.
Surprisingly, one of Kishore Kumar & RD Burman’s greatest hit number was from this movie.
