We all love travelling and going on vacations, but most of the time its the budget that makes us avoid going to certain locations.

And the cost of accommodation is one of the biggest drains on your budget.

No matter where you go, hotels are always expensive places to stay. But then we all firmly believe that hotels are cleaner places to stay (despite the cost) as opposed to a ‘hostel’ (that usually triggers terrifying images).

Here are some of the reasons for the negativity associated with hostels:

1. If you watch movies, you know that most crimes are shown taking place in hostels
2. Over time, hostels have become synonymous with student backpackers
3. In some (developing) countries, hostels do have dirty surroundings
4. Some have 10 people packed in to a room with unsanitary facilities.

And this is why either most don’t want to stay in a hostel or think that they’re only for backpackers.

However, thinking that hostels will not provide the kind of accommodation you desire on holiday could actually cost you dear.

While hostels are never going to be able to provide hotel standard accommodation, they’re not quite as bad as we’re lead to believe.

1. Hostels do offer joint sleeping accommodation, but most hostels also offer single and double rooms, often complete with en suite. These are usually up to 1 or 2 star hotel standard, only without the price tag.
2. Most YMCA hostels offer separate rooms (with attached baths); the rooms are a bit compact but are cleaner and you get all hotel-like facilities
3. If it’s cleanliness you’re worried about, fear not; hostels are governed and regulated by the same health and safety boards that control hotels.

To Conclude

When on vacation, almost everyone would love to have more money for enjoying yourself and for having fun.
So cost is really an issue when planning your holiday, it’s definitely worth checking a hostel out, as you could find yourself pleasantly surprised.
