Salman Khan agrees to refund losses to distributors for Tubelight debacle. Now that’s being human!

July 11, 2017 by BollywoodPresents Team

salman khan

Salman Khan has agreed to refund losses to distributors because of the failure of Tubelight at the box-office. While Salman Khan said he would pay Rs. 55 crores to the distributors, his father Salim Khan was more practical, and said the final figure would be confirmed later, as the movie is still running in theatres.

Distributors, who suffered heavy losses, had a meeting with Salman and his father, and at the end of it, the father-son duo agreed to shoulder the losses.

“Yes, we have assured them that we will share their losses. There are no two ways about this. There is no doubt we shall compensate them. Ab kitna karenge, woh decide karna baaki hai. This can’t be decided in a meeting of just 1 or 2 hours. Tubelight is still running and paise aa rahen hain. When it all ends and we look into the final accounts, we will decide how much we can share the losses suffered by the distributors,” said Salim Khan.

Industry insiders and distributors are happy with the generous gesture on part of the Khans.

Titanic ‘Tubelight’ sinks, distributors left in pain

Trade experts are calling Tubelight – one of the biggest debacles in Salman Khan’s career, after ‘Wanted’. Even though there are no other big movie releases, people are not going to watch Tubelight now due to the poor word-of-mouth publicity.

Despite the slow start at the box office, Tubelight makers were hoping that the box office collection on Eid would be much better. However, the collection did not improve much. The film will go over 100 crores after the first week but might not collect much later on, considering the poor word of mouth. Overall it’s a failure at the box office. Even though producers have made huge profits, the distributors have lost lot of money.

“Tubelight needs to earn Rs 300-350 crore for distributors to make any profit. Distributors have bought the film at high prices considering how Salman Khan’s film performs on Eid. They were expecting the film to do an overall box office business of Rs 300-350 crore so that they can make profit,” said a Film trade expert.

As per various reports, the theatrical rights of Tubelight were sold for Rs 132 crore, TV and music rights were sold for Rs 55 crore and Rs 38 crore respectively. While theatrical rights were bought for a fixed price, satellite right buyers can breathe easy as they probably have to pay a certain figure depending on the performance of the film at the box office.

Tubelight movie review: Good message but the messenger disappoints

The overall verdict for Tubelight is that its disappointing. The plot is thin, the acting is fine by everyone, barring Salman — many have rated Salman’s acting as the worst performance of his career. Salman is in full Forrest Gump mode, although he’s nowhere near to Tom Hanks as an actor.

#OneWordReview… #Tubelight: Disappointing. Solid star power [Salman Khan]. Stunning visuals. But #Tubelight is body beautiful, minus soul.Tubelight rests on a thin plot… Screenplay lacks the power to enthral and mesmerise… Emotions plenty, but few moments stand out…Tubelight will have an awesome weekend + extended weekend [Eid festivities]… Will it touch ₹ 300 cr, ₹ 400 cr, ₹ 500 cr? I doubt!

At the outset, one must warn people that Tubelight is a departure from your regular Salman Khan mass entertainers. Here Bollywood’s darling-star plays a child-man who doesn’t take off his shirt or flex his biceps. So the audience going in for this one, must first invest belief (or should that be disbelief?) in this age of innocence offering from Kabir Khan, whose past outings Ek Tha Tiger and Bajrangi Bhaijaan were more commercially-wired.

Tubelight presents Salman in full Forrest Gump mode. Laxman, the golden-hearted simpleton, not only loves his brother Bharat (Sohail Khan), he also teaches us to love our neighbours, during peace or strife. It matters not where the borders are; love conquers all. The message is perfect, especially apt for these manic times. The messenger is far from. The effort, on Salman’s part, to come off slow-witted, shows in every frame. It’s all feels constructed, and on the surface, with no nuance.

Director Kabir Khan admitted in an interview that the objective of this cinematic tribute was to make the inspiring story accessible to a larger audience. And while Salman fans across the world would make for a populous target, inflicting them with this preachy tale of leaning on ‘yakeen’ to get through life could be a tad misleading. But then, we’re speaking to those who feel that hanging one’s shades over the back of one’s collar is the path to ultimate glory.

On the whole, TUBELIGHT come across as a colossal disappointment as it fails to engross the audiences due to its wafer thin plot. At the Box-Office, the movie will take a jumpstart due to Salman Khan’s star power and accelerate over the weekend and the extended weekend [due to the Eid festivities], post which, the business will see a sizeable drop.

Kabir Khan gets most things right. Tubelight is about love, trust, magic and belief. It’s like a tonic for weary souls. You will find yourself interacting with the film and characters. Tubelight is a wannabe Forrest Gump. It gets slow and monotonous after a while. The pace is slow and it drags in parts. The songs are partly to be blamed for slowing the film down.

Ratings:3.5/5 Review By:Bollywood Life Site:Bollywood Life
Tubelight isn’t a bad film, it has a lot of things going for it, but it is heavily weighed down by the weight of the superstar plastered across its poster. In an effort to make Salman emote and make us cry, Kabir has lost track of the story arc. Tubelight has a message that resonates with current times – keep the faith and believe in the good. Salman’s sincere and heartfelt performance in the film will definitely move you. Keep that box of tissues handy! .

Salman Khan’s Tubelight box office business may suffer due to this reason…
While Salman Khan’s Tubelight is expected to do good business as its releasing around Eid, it may lose some money initially due to this reason.

“The film is releasing during Ramadan and not Eid (this year Eid has fallen on Monday). Over the years, it has been seen that the footfall during Ramadan is not much. So, while the film may earn only Rs 90 crore during the entire weekend, Monday aka Eid business (expected to earn Rs 35 to Rs 40 crore on a single day) will change the entire box office scenario for the film (the same happened during ‘Wanted’),” says a trade analyst.

About Tubelight

‘Tubelight’ is set in the backdrop of the Indo-Sino war in 1962. The movie shows how people get affected when two countries go to war, its an emotional journey of a man called Laxman Singh Bisht (Bisht is a common surname in Kumaon region in Uttarakhand) played by Salman Khan. Bharat (Sohail Khan), part of the Indian army’s Kumaon regiment, is called in at the Indo-China border. After he disappears, Laxman (Salman Khan) leaves on a mission to find him and touches everyone’s life on the way.

Salman Khan plays a very different character says the director
Director Kabir Khan says Salman Khan is playing a very different character in “Tubelight”, and says the superstar has pushed himself a lot in terms of performance. In the past, Kabir and Salman have worked together on films like “Ek Tha Tiger” and “Bajrangi Bhaijaan”.

Shahrukh Khan and Salman Khan will share screen space in a film after a gap of almost 15 years. Shahrukh will be playing a cameo in ‘Tubelight’, but director Kabir Khan says its not a gimmick meant for creating buzz.

“It was a role screaming for a superstar cameo otherwise I wouldn’t have. I find it gimmicky. But when you will watch the film, you will realise the role needed a superstar. We went to him with the role and he was kind enough to agree. It is a brilliant cameo but I can’t say much about it because it will take away the joy of seeing it,” director Kabir Khan on SRK’s cameo.

Chinese actress Zhu Zhu makes her Bollywood debut with this film.

Tubelight Teaser

Salman Khan shared a promotional video clip of ‘Tubelight’ on Twitter, though it doesn’t reveal much about the movie (its shorter than even a teaser).

The only thing you can guess is that the word ‘Tubelight’ refers to someone ‘naive’, who is not smart enough (takes longer to comprehend things), and the kids in the video are saying ‘jal ja’, which means light up (use your brain).
