‘Udta Punjab’ has finally hit the theatres and both Bollywood celebs as well as critics have good things to say about the film. The film has stellar performances from the actors and several ‘highs’.
STORY:
The film has four parallel story-lines, that of a Punjabi Rockstar, Tommy Singh (Shahid) a Bihari migrant, Kumari Pinky (Alia); a Sikh cop, Sartaj (Diljit) and a doctor, Preet (Kareena).
Their lives are sometimes linked to one another but usually not. The movie focuses on the artificial highs and the real lows that the characters go through.
Why You Must Watch the Movie
Here are top reasons to see the (legal version) of the film ‘Udta Punjab’:
- Great performances, especially Shahid & Alia
- Gives You a ‘High’
- Well researched story
- Makes you cringe at times (being a Anurag Kashyap film, expect the movie to have a dark side to it. The movie also uses abusive language)
- The movie also has humour to it (at several parts throughout the film).
- Also worth watching are the stunning locales of Punjab.
- The movie is Socially relevant
- The movie highlights an important issue, but doesn’t preach.
‘Udta Punjab’ Pirated Copy Available Online: Bollywood Lashes Out
After the controversy (over censorship), post which the Bombay High court cleared ‘Udta Punjab’ with just one cut, a leaked version of the movie was available online.
The filmmakers see it as an act of vengeance (on the part of CBFC). The movie was available on torrent sites for illegal download. However, soon the download links were “removed due to a copyright complaint”, the websites read.
“I am not sure whether it was a CBFC copy. But if it is a censor copy then its a shame for CBFC and reflects badly on them. Piracy is an issue, which we all have been fighting for a very long time,” Aamir Khan said.
Mumbai Police confirmed the news and were tracing the IP address through which the movie was allegedly uploaded.
Anurag Kashyap’s banner Phantom Films Pvt Ltd have filed an FIR under relevant sections of the Information Technology Act and under various sections of the Copyright Act.
Meanwhile, Bollywood biggies have requested fans to watch the movies in theatres, before downloading the pirated copy.
“Piracy happens because of lack of access and in a world of free internet, I do not have a problem with it. My problem is that this time its a case of vested interests trying to demoralise people from fighting for their rights,” Anurag wrote on Facebook.
The Abhishek Chaubey directed film ‘Udta Punjab’, starring Shahid Kapoor (plays the role of a Punjabi rockstar, inspired by Honey Singh), Alia Bhatt (plays a migrant from Bihar), Punjabi star Diljit Dosanjh (plays a tough cop) and Kareena Kapoor (plays a doctor), deals with the issue of drug abuse in the state of Punjab.
Kareena Kapoor agreed to do a small role in the movie because she feels that if actors don’t do these kinds of films, the message (about drug menace) will never be out.
“I chose to be a part of this film because it is important that this message gets told, which am sure is going to come on screen,” said Kareena.
