Shabana Azmi, an alumnus of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) of Pune, made her film debut in 1974 and went on to become one of India’s leading actress.

Shabana Azmi, along with Deepti Naval and Smita Patil, formed the formidable trio, who were considered acting powerhouses back in the 70s and 80s.

Birth Date: September 18, 1950
Star Sign: Virgo (Virgo-Libra cusp)

Shabana Azmi’s talents were on display right from her first film – ‘Ankur’, which fetched her a National Award. Since then, she has featured in several art films as well as commercial films, but she is remembered more for her hard-hitting acts than her glamorous performances.

“She is one of the finest actors of Indian cinema. When Shabanaji gets emotional, she rips the screen apart,” Sanjay Leela Bhansali.

“I was never comfortable working in commercial films. But yet, I loved working with Manmohan Desai so much so that when he asked me to do a character in Amar Akbar Anthony despite telling me that I had virtually no role in it, I did not think twice. ‘I am pushing you in AAA simply because nahin toh Vinod Khanna meri jaan kha jayega that why he doesn’t have a girlfriend in the film like Amitabh Bachchan and Rishi Kapoor have,’ he told me. In Parvarish, Neetu Singh and I were hanging from a well made at RK Studios and we had to stand above a few crocodiles waiting to eat our feet. Imagine! Art cinema is easier to do as situations in it are closer to real life.

Madras HC issues notice to A R Rahman over tax evasion

The Madras High Court recently issued a notice to music maestro A R Rahman for tax evasion. It’s alleged that Rahman diverted money to his foundation to save on taxes, as per this report.

AR Rahman

As per the IT department, in the assessment year 2011-12, Rahman received Rs 3.47 crore from UK-based Libra Mobiles to compose exclusive ringtones for the company. However, Rahman instructed the company to pay the money directly to the foundation (managed by him), the department said.

The IT department’s stand is that Rahman should have taken the money in his account as professional fee, paid the tax, and then transferred the money to his foundation if he wanted to. However, by taking the money as a donation directly in the trust’s name, he ensured no tax was paid to the Indian government, as income to a charitable trust is exempted under the Income Tax Act.

Panama Papers

Remember, the black money controversy, where it was alleged that a few film personalities had secret bank accounts in HSBC Geneva? Then it was the ‘Panama Papers’.

Mossack Fonseca, a law firm headquartered in tax haven Panama, helps its worldwide clientele evade tax (as per Indian Express report), for a fee, by setting up offshore entities in tax havens around the world, masking the real ownership of the company.

Names of Bollywood biggies like Amitabh Bachchan & Aishwarya Rai Bachchan had also figured in the list of Indians who were clients of the law firm.

However, Mr Bachchan later released a statement saying the allegations are not true. Mr. Bachchan said his name was misused and denied any connection with companies in TAX HAVENS.

“I have never been a director of any of the… stated companies. It is possible that my name has been misused,” the statement issued by Mr Bachchan said.

Kapil Sharma in Tax Controversy

Sometime back, Kapil Sharma was engulfed in a controversy where it was alleged that Kapil Sharma didn’t pay service tax amounting to nearly Rs 65 lakh. However, Kapil Sharma later clarified that the delay happened because he got caught up in his work, and he had all the intentions to pay the service tax.

Tamil Superstar Vijay Evaded Income Tax for 5 Years

Income tax officials, after raided the properties of Tamil superstar Vijay, had revealed that the Tamil actor has been (partially) evading payment of income tax for the past five years.

Income tax officers had also raided the houses of actresses Samantha Ruth Prabhu, Nayanthara, producers P.T. Selva Kumar and Shibu Thameens, financier Ramesh (“Puli”).

“All of them including Vijay have been paying tax but not the full amount. The total tax evaded amount comes to about Rs.25 crore,” revealed a source from the income tax department.

Famous Income Tax Raids

And what about income tax raids?

Of course they have happened! In the past, income tax officers have raided the homes of several celebrities, to track tax evasions. Whenever, their films do well, or when thy buy a new house, or when they buy a luxury car, the income tax guys come knocking at their doorsteps.

Here are some interesting instances.

  • Priyanka Chopra: The actress had assets worth Rs.7.5 crores hidden in her apartment. Interestingly, when the IT officials landed up at Pee Cee’s residence one fine morning, it was Shahid Kapoor who had opened the door :).
  • Sanjay Dutt: His residence was once raided because Sanju baba was fond of wearing custom-made wristwatches…worth a few crore rupees.
  • Sonu Nigam: The flashy luxury cars lined up at Sonu Nigam’s residence caught the attention of the IT officials who perform a raid at his house.
  • Madhuri Dixit: The IT officials who raided Madhuri Dixit’s residence broke one of the walls of her house and found money stashed in them.

Veteran actor and filmmaker Rakesh Roshan has completed five decades in the film industry. However, his life and career has never been easy. He struggled initially as an actor and his family had to face hardships. He has been shot at by people from the underworld and even battled throat cancer. But being a true fighter, Rakesh emerged victorious in all his battles.

Born: 6 September 1949 . Zodiac/Star Sign: Virgo . Nickname: Guddu . Hobbies: Cooking

Son of Bollywood music director Roshan, Rakesh is married to Pinky, daughter of director J. Om Prakash. Besides Hrithik, he also has a daughter named Sunaina.

Watch: Rakesh Roshan in Koi roko na deewane ko – PRIYATAMA (1978)

Several years back (2006 to be precise), Hrithik Roshan and his ex-wife Sussanne Khan had appeared on Simi Garewal’s show, Rendezvous with Simi Garewal. On the show, Hrithik revealed the financial hardships that his family had to face when he was a child.

His mother, Pinky Roshan, took Hrithik and his sister to her father’s house while his actor father Rakesh Roshan lived with his mother. “Until the time my dad could earn enough money to buy another house. And then we shifted into another house which was barely just walls and floors. We slept on gaddas, these mats and slowly got the furniture in,” Hrithik said.

Rakesh Roshan is one director who makes movies at his own leisurely pace. After completing almost 50 years in the industry Rakesh is content with life and also happy with his decision to ‘move on’ at the right time.

“When I realised my films [as an actor] weren’t working, I knew it was time to move over to the other side. I started off as a producer and went on to direct films. There has been no looking back ever since,” Rakesh Roshan.

Rakesh says, “I never moved ahead in my career despite some of my movies doing well. So I started producing films and then moved to direction. Now, when I look back I feel happy. Back then, I had no idea how I will get the money to run my house. I had two children, a wife and a family to look after. But somehow we always managed. Maybe God had a plan for me to become a producer and director,” he said.

On parenting, Rakesh says he could not give enought time and attentions to his kids when they were small because he was struggling with his own career. “I could not spend much time with my children but I would make sure we went for holidays. Growing up may have been tough for them because I could not give them everything as I couldn’t afford it. But I made sure I brought them up really nicely”.

Rakesh is proud of Hrithik’s achievements. “Hrithik has done the things I could not do in my life. He has had his ups and downs in his career and I feel it should always happen because that’s how he will learn from his mistakes,” says Rakesh.

Rajesh started his acting career in the 1970 film Ghar Ghar Ki Kahani. Rajesh Roshan set up his own production company in 1980 and produced a few films before making his directorial debut with the film Khudgarz (1987). Since then there has been no looking back. He went on to direct films like Khoon Bhari Maang (1988), Kishen Kanhaiya (1990), Karan Arjun (1995), Koyla (1997). Rajesh launched his son Hrithik with Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai (2000), worked with him again in Koi Mil Gaya (2003), followed by the Krissh franchise.

In 2000, Roshan was shot at by unidentified assailants near his office on Tilak Road at Santacruz West. The assailants fired two bullets at him, one of which hit him on the left arm while the other grazed his chest. Rajesh was taken to the Nanavati hospital where Dr. Sharad Pandey, father of Chunkey Pandey, successfully operated on him. Roshan had rejected demands from Budesh (gangster) for a percentage of the profits from the overseas sale of the Hindi blockbuster, Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai.

Find out more about Sushant Singh Rajput’s lifestyle, net worth, his bucket list, and his approach towards life.

Sushant Singh Rajput: Net Worth

Investigators have ruled out financial woes as the reason for Sushant Singh Rajput’s suicide. It seems the late actor had a net worth was around 59 crore INR and owned stylish bikes & cars, expensive telescope and space-related gadgets, and even owned land on moon.

Investigations into Sushant Singh Rajput’s suicide reveal that he did not face any financial troubles. Sushant owned several luxurious products and had a passion for space-related things.

Sushant was a bike enthusiast and owned the stylish and expensive BMW K 1300 R motorcycle. He was also a proud owner of luxury sports car Maserati Quattroporte and a Land Rover Range Rover SUV.

The actor was passionate about space and astronomy and owned expensive gadgets to support his passion for space.

Sushant’s net worth was around 59 crore INR, and we used to charge between Rs 5-7 crore for a movie.

Sushant was also involved in several social initiatives, such as promoting NITI Aayog (Women Entrepreneurship programme) and Sushant4Education, an initiative to help young students.

Sushant Singh: Passion for Star Gazing and Astronomy

Sushant singh was passionate about Space

Sushant Singh Rajput moved to a seaside duplex bungalow with a sprawling 6,000 sqft terrace in BKC, Bandra (E), paying a rent of Rs 2 lakh per month, to get an unrestricted view of the sky.

Such was Rajput’s passion for star and moon gazing that he would spend the entire night gazing at stars with a powerful telescope and sets of powerful lenses (which was found in the house). The actor was the owner of an advanced telescope called the Meade 14″ LX600.

“It’s one of the most advanced telescopes in the world and I’m going to be able to see Saturn’s rings through it,” Sushant had said about the telescope.

It seems, as a child, Sushant dreamt of becoming an astronaut and work at NASA.

In 2019, Sushant even shared a video of the training that he took at USSRC (U.S. Space & Rocket Center) as he was going to play an astronaut for his upcoming film Chanda Mama Door Ke. Sharing the video, Sushant had written, “#[email protected] ! “The hatch that opens to the dreams, that which makes you week in the knees(at least 1/6 times:), and then even metaphorically, make you feel over the moon. ——— #Apollo #Lunarmodule #commandmodule #training #astronony #passion #AncientDreams.”

Here’s the video.

“I am playing an astronaut in the film and I just finished training on a simulator this week. Sanjay (the director) has given me around 15 books and eight documentaries, including For All Mankind (1989) that documents National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (NASA) Apollo mission, to understand the life of astronauts,” Sushant said in an interview.

The film was however shelved after Sushant’s death!

Because Sushant could not fulfill his childhood dream of becoming an astronaut, he was keen to help kids who had an interest in the subject. The actor had sent a few kids to NASA, one of them even won a gold medal and is now training to become an astronaut.

As per Sushant’s bucket list, he wanted to send many more kids to NASA in US.

In one of his interviews, Sushant had said, “I had done a workshop at NASA when I went there two years ago. Those who trained me had said that if I continued for a few more weeks, I would have received a certificate of instructor. So, now, I am planning to go to Houston to complete the training. It consists of everything that you need to know about going to space, including sitting in the centrifuge.”

The actor even felt he possibly stood a chance of going to the moon.

“NASA plans to send astronauts on the Moon by 2024. I am planning to prepare myself for it, in case I get lucky,” Sushant had said back then.

Many also claim that Sushant Singh Rajput had bought a piece of land in the region of Mare Muscoviense, also called the Sea of Muscovy on the moon.

Sushant Singh Rajput: Film Career

Sushant began his showbiz journey through Ekta Kapoor’s TV show Kis Desh Mein Hai Meraa Dil but found stardom because of his role in the soap Pavitra Rishta (with Ankita Lokhande). He made his Bollywood debut in the film Kai Po Che (based on Chetan Bhagat’s novel The 3 Mistakes of My Life).

Sushant has done films like Shuddh Desi Romance, Detective Byomkesh Bakshy and MS Dhoni: The Untold Story. He even had an important role in Raju Hirani directed PK.

Rajput was pursuing Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical Engineering) in Delhi Technological University, when he decided to enroll for Shiamak Davar’s dance classes. There he met students who were also attending Barry John’s drama classes and influenced by them, Rajput also joined the acting classes. Soon, he became disenchanted with engineering and dropped out of college to pursue acting.

Sushant Singh Rajput’s last film “Dil Bechara” was an adaptation of John Green’s popular novel, “The fault in our stars”; the book has already been made into an Hollywood film by the same name.

Besides the nice performances, the movie has refreshing music by AR Rahman, who is still at the top of his game.

Actor Sushant Singh Rajput was found hanging at his Mumbai residence (Bandra), Mumbai Police said. He was 34 when he died. Sushant’s death came just barely a week after his former manager Disha Salian committed suicide last Monday by jumping off the 14th floor of her apartment in Mumbai.

Those who were close to Sushant say that he was under a lot of stress as most of the big banner films that he had signed, got canceled, and there were rumours that he had been replaced by star sons.

While the photo-shoot was strictly guarded, photographers spotted Jenner and Sushant at the Jaipur airport, leaving for different destinations, after the photo-shoot.

There is huge anger building up against nepotism driven Bollywood, after Sushant Singh Rajput’s suicide. Several celebrities like Shekhar Kapur, Kangana Ranaut, and Suman Suman have given out angry remarks, with Shekha Suman even demanding a CBI inquiry as there are many who believe that Sushant was coerced into committing suicide.

Kanagana Ranaut is the only leading actress who has been openly talking about nepotism in the industry and openly criticising the top actors/directors for indulging in nepotism.

Now after Sushant’s suicide, the likes of Karan Johar, Salman Khan, and Yash Raj films are being targetted for encouraging nepotism within th industry.

Karan Johar asking Sonam Kapoor’s opinion on various young actors, and when Sushant Singh Rajput’s name crops up, it’s like…who?

Watch, SRK and Shahid Kapoor ragging Sushant Singh, and he seems really uncomfortable.

Here’s what Kangana said when she was asked if she would help her child if he/she would want to become an actor 20 years down the line, “If I do that, the possibility of him being a good director will be 50 per cent. If I really care for him as a mother, I will let him find his own way, because he can make a good living out of anything, anywhere. But if I want him to be an extraordinary person, I must throw him into the sea. He will either drown or make it.”

Kangana even gave an example from her own life. She said that her brother is “struggling” to become a pilot for the past four years and that he is looking for a job. But she would never make any call to help him.

Kareena Kapoor says ‘nepotism does not exist’, cites Ranveer Singh

Kareena Kapoor Khan says Nepotism does not exist in Bollywood, gives example of new superstar ‘Ranveer Singh’.

Kareena Kapoor Khan, along with sister Karishma Kapoor were present at The India Today Conclave 2018 when Kareena was asked a question on nepotism by journalist Rajdeep Sardesai; she was asked if nepotism exists in the film industry.

Kareena said nepotism does not exist in Bollywood.

Kareena replied: “There are so many superstars from yesteryears and not all of their children are a superstar. If nepotism exists, they would have been a big star by now. The fact that Ranveer Singh has become the new superstar of Bollywood who does not come from a film family proves the fact that they become superstar out of their sheer talent and hard work. Nepotism does not exist”.

“I think it is about the talent that takes you where you go. When you are on-screen, anybody can make or break you; anyone can make a judgment on you irrespective of you are a daughter or grandchildren of someone. And for a youngster who has a huge family and legacy behind, is much tough to make a mark,” added Karishma.

Karan Johar gets flak for ‘Nepotism’ for announcing Sairat remake ‘Dhadak’ with Starkids

Karan is back in the news for nepotism, and this time the barbs are not from Kanagana Ranaut. Its from the public in general, after Karan Johar announced the launch of ‘Dhadak’ (remake of Marathi blockbuster film Sairat) with star kids Jhanvi Kapoor (Sridevi’s daughter) and Ishaan Khattar (Shahid Kapoor’s half-brother).

Ever since Karan (KJo) was announced the film, people have been criticizing Karan on social for signing only ‘children of stars or celebrities’.

Varun, Karan & Saif apologise for their ‘nepotism rocks’ chant at IIFA 2017

Filmmaker Karan Johar and Actors Saif Ali Khan & Varun Dhawan’s ‘nepotism’ act (taking potshots at Kangana Ranaut) at the IIFA 2017 backfired big-time on them. Realizing that their joke on nepotism hasn’t gone down well with the fans, the trio regretted doing the act and for hurting people’s feelings.

“Nepotism doesn’t rock. It sucks. And @karanjohar Saif & @Varun_dvn look like total losers mocking Kangana from the IIFA stage. I dare you to chant “Nepotism Rocks” in the presence of #KanganaRanaut. She has scared you enough to go 3 against 1,” Rajdeep Sardesai’s tweets.

“It was a silly, immature gag. And also badly written. I am against nepotism and unfair privilege, but I also think we are all guilty of it, across sectors. Sadly it’s the system, not the doing of a few. Giving sifarish for friends to get jobs?? Are we not trusting our children to work in the family business when better qualified people exist outside? All this is nepotism. First let’s fix that before we take the moral high ground,” says Writer-filmmaker Apurva Asrani.

Filmmaker Karan Johar, Saif Ali Khan and Varun Dhawan (they all belong to film families) didn’t shy away from bringing up the nepotism debate at the IIFA Awards event in New York.

When Varun joined the two actors on the stage to receive the Best Performance in a Comic Role for “Dishoom”, Saif joked that the actor had made it big in the industry because of his father, director David Dhawan.

“You are here because of your pappa,” Saif quipped.

Varun said: “And you’re here because of your mummy (veteran actress Sharmila Tagore).”

Karan then promptly added: “I am here because of my pappa (late filmmaker Yash Johar).”

They then said in unison: “Nepotism rocks”.

Varun, well aware of Kangana Ranaut’s dislike for nepotism, took a potshot at Karan saying: “There was a song in your film… ‘Bole choodiyan, bole kangana.”

Karan, with his quick wit, then commented: “Kangana naa hi bole toh achha hai… Kangana bahut bolti hai. (It’s better Kangana doesn’t say anything, she talks a lot)”

Kangana Ranaut fights Bollywood’s family business, Karan Johar says don’t play “victim card” all the time

Kangana Ranaut has no filmy background, nor did she have any godfather before she entered Bollywood. He has not done any film yet opposite any of the ‘Top Khans’. Despite that Kangana Ranaut is one of the most sought after and top aid actresses in Bollywood.

She took on Hrithik, openly says that she does not need a Khan to make a movie a super hit, and now she seems to have irritated Karan Johar as well.

Bollywood is dominated by the Khans, Kapoors, Chopras and Roshans (its similar down south as well). The film industry is more of family business (its similar in business as well as politics).

Karan, after maintaining silence for some time (probably waiting for his twins to be born), has now made it clear which side he is on.

“I am done with Kangana playing the woman card and the victim card. I am done. You cannot be this victim at every given point of time who has this sad story to tell about how she has been terrorised by ‘bad Bollywood’. If it is that way then leave,” Johar said during a session with Anupama Chopra at London School of Economics, India Forum.

It all started with the episode of “Koffee With Karan”, where Kangana Ranaut had come to promote her movie ‘Rangoon’ (the movie failed to match the hype at the box-office).

On an episode of “Koffee With Karan”, Kangana had said “Johar would be perfect to play the role of a stereotypical Bollywood biggie who is snooty and completely intolerant to outsiders. Flag-bearer of nepotism. The movie mafia in her biopic if it is ever made.”

Karan Johar was gracious enough not to edit Kangana’s views…

While Karan did not agree with Kangana’s comments, he still aired her comments as he respected her point of view.

“She had a great prospective and point of view. Everyone lauded her for coming on to my show and (how she) ‘gave it off to Karan’. I was gracious enough to not cut anything and let it be that way. I could have edited it as it was my show. I cut none of it. I said, ‘No, let the world listen to her opinion and she must voice it’. I gave her the platform,” Karan

Kangana may have taken a few years to reach where she is today, but she has been hitting headlines ever since she stepped into the industry. Be her looks, her accent, her English, her link ups, her frank opinions, everything has been in news.

So how many more Bollywood Biggies will the girl from Himachal take on?

Only time will tell, but one thing is for sure…the Queen is here to stay, and she is not the one to indulge in diplomacy. So you can expect more fireworks in the future, with her bad ass attitude and super hit blockbusters.

Kangana pairs with AIB to take nasty jabs at Bollywood bigwigs (Video)

Just when we thought Kangana Ranaut would stop after Aap ki Adalat, she’s paired with AIB and come up with a video that takes jabs at the Bollywood biggies – Karan Johar, Shah Rukh Khan, Hrithik Roshan and several others.

“The Bollywood Diva Song” featuring Kangana Ranaut is one of the best things that you will see for some time now, on the internet.

The song is basically a series of one-liners put together that taunts the biggies. For example, one of the line is “Papa ne tujhko launch kiya ve, Main boli toh tune taunt kiya ve, tu karti victim play.”

The song is a rehashed version of Chittiyan Kalaiyan, the refrain to which goes “Coz I have a vagina rey.”

Watch: AIB feat. Kangana Ranaut – The Bollywood Diva Song

I’m sure you would have guessed that the guy in the video is shown as SRK

Can you guess the names of all the celebrities Kangana took a dig at?

When Karan Johar admitted that ‘nepotism exists in Bollywood’

Kangana Ranaut called Karan Johar the flag-bearer of nepotism in Bollywood, and since then Bollywood celebs have been voicing their opinion on nepotism in Bollywood.

While Karan Johar chose to disagree with Kangana, an old video has surfaced where Karan admits that he cast Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt in Student of the Year because they were star kids.

He also admits that he wouldn’t have been a filmmaker had it not been for his father (who was a film producer).

Here’s the video from the chat show hosted by Anupama Chopra.

Here are some of the things that Karan mentioned in the video:

  • I picked up a chubby girl, I saw something…and maybe the fact – that she was Mahesh Bhatt’s daughter also excited me.
  • Because Varun was David’s son, he was on the sets as an AD (assistant director) and spent enough time for me to understand that he can be a movie star. Would I have cast Varun Dhawan had he not been David Dhawan’s son?

“If this is nepotism, then definitely, I am guilty. A lot of factors determine movie stardom in our country and I think true talent is the least of them,” said Karan.

“In my biopic, if it is ever made, you will play the stereotypical villain. One who is intolerant of outsiders, the flag-bearer of nepotism in Bollywood and movie mafia,” Kangana Ranaut.

Son of Bollywood veteran Dharmendra and brother to Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol recently completed 25 years in Bollywood.

But it was definitely not smooth sailing for Bobby, who is grateful to his loyal fans for always being there to support him.

Bobby Deol began his filmi career with a bang featuring in Rajkumar Santoshi’s “Barsaat” opposite another star child Twinkle Khanna in 1995.

The film had some great music and made Bobby a household name.

Not many are aware that Bobby also played the younger Dharam in Manmohan Desai”s 1977 hit film “Dharam-Veer”.

After the success of “Barsaat”, Deol featured in several hit films such as “Gupt”, “Soldier”, “Ajnabee”, and “Humraaz”.

However, his career took a nosedive from there on, which lasted a long time (late 2000s and early 2010s). His career saw a revival with the success of multi-starrer films like “Race 3” and “Housefull 4”.

Deol, recently made his digital debut with the Netflix film “Class of 83” and followed it with the MX Original Series “Aashram”. The actor played a veteran cop in “Class of 83”, and played self-styled godman Baba Nirala in Prakash Jha directed “Aashram”. Both his performances were appreciated by fans.

So what went wrong with his career?

“Nothing is perfect, you make wrong choices. You can never decide when you choose a project whether it will be a big hit or not. This new chapter of my life is going well”. Describing his journey as “not perfect but wonderful”, Bobby Deol says he is looking forward to another long inning in Bollywood.

The actor says he now wants to be “fearless” while choosing projects. He wants to do character driven roles that are challenging and is thankful to the current generation of writers and filmmakers for giving him a chance to explore new roles.

Talking about his debut, the actor said that just like any other newcomer, even he too took classes in acting, dance and action.

While many producers were keen to launch him, his father Dharmendra wanted to launch him the way he introduced his elder brother Sunny Deol with “Betaab” in 1983.

In the very first scene that he shot for Barsaat, Bobby Deol broke his leg while riding a horse and a rod had to be inserted after a surgery. The scene was shot again on the last day. I am lucky I can still walk, dance, and jump,” says Bobby.

Bobby Deol had already signed a few films, including “Gupt”, “Kareeb”, “Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya” and “Soldier” while shooting for his debut film Barsaat.

Irrfan Khan, one of India’s most respected thespians, died in Mumbai’s Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, where he was being treated for a colon infection. Irrfan Khan is survived by his wife Sutapa and two sons.

“I had been in a different game, I was travelling on a speedy train ride, had dreams, plans, aspirations, goals, was fully engaged in them. And suddenly someone taps on my shoulder and I turn to see. It’s the TC: “Your destination is about to come. Please get down.” I am confused: No, no. My destination hasn’t come. No, this is it. This is how it is sometimes,” Irrfan Khan.

A couple of years back when Irrfan was diagnosed with cancer, he said  “I trust, I’ve surrendered, irrespective of the outcome”.

Irrfan khan's 'letting go' dialogue in Life of Pi

“I suppose in the end, the whole of life becomes an act of letting go, but what always hurts the most is not taking a moment to say goodbye,” Irrfan Khan quotes Yann Martel in Life of Pi.

The hashtag #IrrfanKhan and #RIPIrfan have been trending on Twitter after reports of his death came in.

The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences (Oscars) condoled his demise. “A mainstay of Bollywood cinema and incredible talent in films like ‘Slumdog Millionaire,’ ‘Life of Pi’ and ‘The Namesake,’ Irrfan Khan left his imprint on global cinema. An inspiration to millions, he will be greatly missed,” tweeted the Academy.

Bollywood fraternity poured in condolences for the actor’s family.

Irrfan Khan’s Rising Stardom in Bollywood

Irrfan Khan may come across as a methodical actor but he also does roles playing to the galleries, and many are already seeing him as the new-age romantic hero. Lets take a look at the rising stardom of Irrfan khan in Bollywood.

Irrfan Khan

It’s Irrfan Khan who’s capturing all the filmy headlines currently, as his ‘Talvar’ opened to packed houses and is further gaining momentum through word of mouth. Now another of his film ‘Jazbaa’ (opposite Aishwarya Rai Khan) is releasing this Friday. Not only is Irrfan drawing praise from the audiences/fans, several Bollywood’s leading ladies are going gaga over his performances.

Although Bollywood is said to be ruled by the ‘Khans’, the ‘Khans’ doesn’t include the name of Irrfan Khan. However, this Gandhi Jayanti (which turned out to be a long weekend), going by the media coverage of ‘Talvar’ and the upcoming ‘Jazbaa’, its difficult to believe that there’s any bigger star than Irrfan currently in Bollywood.

The best part is that Irrfan got the opportunity to play two different roles. One is that of a serious investigating officer, and the other is a typical masala role where he plays a cop with some great one-liners. So the audience has a choice of which cop they wish to see.

And Irrfan khan is currently the only Bollywood actor who’s sought after by Hollywood filmmakers as well. No wonder even the leading Bollywood ladies want to work with him. Here are a few examples.

  • It seems, Aishwarya Rai is also a big fan of Irrfan Khan and couldn’t believe her ears when Irrfan Khan agreed to star opposite her in ‘Jazbaa’.
  • Deepika, who has worked with Irrfan in Piku, was earlier worried that Irrfan would look down upon her because she’s a commercial heroine, but was happy to see him as a humble and hmorous person. Deepika is said to have become an admirer of Irrfan Khan’s sense of humour while shooting for PIKU.
  • The actor will also be seen opposite Kangana Ranaut in ‘Divine Lovers’.
  • Sushmita sen also tweeted her appreciation for Irrfan Khan’s acting prowess after watching him in Talvar.

There are many who see Irrfan Khan is the new romantic hero in Bollywood. Here’s why:

  • Irrfan Khan’s portrayal of his romantic side is more real than reel. Silence is usually the best form of communication between two people in love, and actor Irrfan Khan seems to do that perfectly.
  • The audience can relate to his looks, after all, not every guy in reality is a Greek God.
  • Irrfan Khan’s love looks matured & more realistic, he comes across as the guy that every girl will like to marry
  • Irrfan impresses by keeping things simple, by engaging in intellectual conversations. Want to go on a long walk on the beach? Irrfan is the guy to go with.

Well, you never know, in the future, Irrfan’s name could very well be taken along with SRK, Salman, & Aamir Khan, as the Bollywood’s top Khans.

Bollywood actor Kartik Aaryan is one of the few young actors in Bollywood who has found equal popularity amongst adult and child audiences. However, despite getting a break in 2011, Kartik had to wait for another 7 years to get noticed.

Kartik Aaryan talks about the power of social media, his seven year struggle in the industry, and pressure of staying relevant in Bollywood.

Using social media in a smarter way

The ‘Pati Patni Aur Woh’ actor says that he used social media to get his big break in 2011.

He used to search for auditions on Facebook as it was huge at that time.

Kartik says that he actually used FB in a smarter way as he would type keywords such as ‘auditions’, ‘actors required’, ‘Mumbai’, ‘actor’s call’ to find auditions, something that most others were not doing.

Eventually, Kartik found an audition for his first film, ‘Pyaar Ka Punchnama’. Kartik says that he sent the director, Luv Ranjan, a cocky message saying, ‘I’m the guy you’re looking for'”- and it worked, says the actor.

While the young adults loved the comedy film, it didn’t really convert into stardom for Kartik. He had to wait for many more years before Kartik became a household name in India.

“Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety” was the film that changed everything for Kartik Aryan.

Post the stupendous success of the movie, Kartik started getting the kind of scripts he always wanted to work in, and the kind of directors he always wanted to work with. So, it all started for Kartik in 2018.

That seven-year struggle makes Kartik a bit hard to accept that he is now an A list actor in Bollywood: “It is surreal because it’s a full circle for me – it never happened overnight. I didn’t have any connect, I didn’t know anyone in the industry.”

Aaryan says his lack of contacts within the industry and lack of inside knowledge impacted his growth and confidence at the beginning of his career. “It was really tough because initially I didn’t trust anyone because (I was) an outsider. It took me five and half years to actually understand the dynamics and understand how PR, or management, or your team helps you grow more and more.”

After ‘Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety’, Kartik gace two hits – ‘Luka Chuppi’ and ‘Pati Patni Aur Woh’ in 2019.

However, Kartik doesn’t take his fame for granted.

“I don’t want my position to go,” says Kartik.

“The challenge now is to maintain it. I used to think that the biggest challenge was actually being a part of this world. But, throughout this journey I’ve realised one thing, that it never stops, you cannot stop. You just have to continue. It’s like a machine which is just on.”

Kartik says he is “competitive” and does keep an eye on his competitors: “Someone else might be working harder (than me), so it’s better to work hard right now. I don’t want my position to go.”

Bollywood is a very difficult industry to break into. Very few manage to make the cut, and even less manage to hold on to their stardom.

Not all actors are able to deal with the unpredictable nature of this profession. While there are some actors who would go to any lengths to get their filmi career back on track, there are some actors who have realised that Bollywood it not where they want to be.

Here we take a look at those actors who decided to quit the rat race and change lanes.

Dino Morea

Dino Morea

Dino Morea began his career with modelling. He then switched to Bollywood and featured in several films, attaining fame with the thriller Raaz. However, for some reason, his career didn’t really take off (probably he gave up too soon).

So he decided to instead focus on the hospitality business. Dino now owns a chain of restaurants in Mumbai.

Kumar Gaurav

Kumar Gaurav

Kumar Gaurav made an impressive debut with the film ‘Love Story’ in 1981 (the film had some amazing songs). While many thought he would achieve stardom, on the contrary, his career soon reached a dead end.

Instead of wasting his time in Bollywood, Kumar pursued an alternate career. He now owns a successful travel business in Maldives.

Preity Zinta

preity zinta

Preity Zinta made her debut in Bollywood with Dil Se and went on to feature in several Bollywood films. At her peak, she was an A-lister in Bollywood and featured in several blockbusters including Veer Zaara, Dil Chahta Hai, Kal Ho Naa Ho, Koi Mil Gaya, Lakshya. Unfortunately, female actors have a limited shelf life in Bollywood, and soon the film offers started declining.

Preity took the sports route and now owns the IPL team Kings XI Punjab and co-owns South-African T20 Global League cricket team Stellenbosch Kings.

Imran Khan

Imran Khan made his acting debut in Bollywood with the film Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na which was a commercial success. At one time, he was considered a competitor of Ranbir Kapoor. Unfortunately, his films started flopping at the box office, and soon he decided to take a break from Bollywood, and has totally disappeared from the limelight.

While Imran owns a popular restaurant in Mumbai, he is still not ready to give up on Bollywood. There are rumours that he is considering direction as an action, and may make a comeback as a director.

Twinkle Khanna

twinkle khanna

Twinkle Khanna made her debut with the film Barsaat in 1995, which did well at the box office. She did several films including Badshaah, Love Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega, Yeh Hai Mumbai Meri Jaan. However, not satisfied with the way her career was progressing, Twinkle quit the film industry in 2001. Twinkle is now a successful films producer, interior designer, author and a newspaper columnist.

Soha Ali Khan

Soha Ali Khan made her Bollywood debut with the film Dil Maange More in 2004. Her work in films like Khoya Khoya Chand, Rang De Basanti, Tum Mile and 99 was appreciated by many. However, Soha was not happy with her career in Bollywood. After marrying actor Kunal Kemmu, Soha quit Bollywood in 2015.

She is now a writer and has authored a book titled The Perils of Being Moderately Famous.
