Bollywood in Poland, Country with Medieval Hot Spots & Energetic Cities https://www.bollywoodpresents.com/bollywood-in-poland/ Sun, 16 Oct 2022 10:57:00 +0000 http://www.bollywoodpresents.com/bollywood-in-poland.html Bollywood in Poland

The post Bollywood in Poland, Country with Medieval Hot Spots & Energetic Cities appeared first on Bollywood Presents.

]]>
Poland is located in the heart of Europe and is well known for its history, which is reflected in its various museums and historical sites, including the Auschwitz concentration camp which reminds one of the horrors of the Second World War.

Several Hollywood movies, such as Schindler’s List and The Pianist have been shot in Poland.

Poland has also now caught the attention of Indian filmmakers, including those in Bollywood, Kollywood and Tollywood. Several Indian films and advertisements have already been filmed in Poland.

Among the Bollywood films shot in Poland, Salman Khan’s movie ‘Kick’ is the most well-known one; the movie was filmed extensively in Poland.

Bollywood in Poland
Poland was in the thick of the action in World War 2, and that’s one of the reasons so many International films have been shot in this country.

Recall seeing ‘the Pianist’? It was a movie about a brilliant pianist, a Polish Jew, who escapes deportation and eludes capture by living in the ruins of Warsaw.

Poland is also a beautiful country (after all its in Europe) and is part of the global tourism market. The attractions include several popular (& historic) cities, stunning landscapes, mountains & forests.

Bollywood Movies Shot in Poland

Since several Hollywood movies get filmed in this country, Poland has good infrastructure and expertise in the area of production & post-production, which Bollywood has started taking note of.

Apart from the modern-looking ‘Warsaw’, the historical architecture of Poland attracts Indian producers and filmmakers.

Places of Interest for filmmakers: Cities like Warsaw (Capital of Poland), Krakow (old capital of Poland). Palaces, museums, and castles (such as Kozłówka palace in eastern Poland, castle in Lubiąż).

For a long time, the Polish tourism department has been urging Bollywood producers and directors to use Poland for their outdoor shooting. Salman Khan’s Kick was the first blockbuster Bollywood movie to be filmed in Poland.

palace of culture in Warsaw Palace of Culture – Tallest building in Warsaw, donated by Soviet leader Joseph Stalin.

The movie ‘Kick’ had some daring/thrilling fight scenes, and the Polish capital ‘Warsaw’ was selected for its tall buildings and several river bridges. In the movie, there were scenes such as Salman jumping from the Gdanski bridge on the river Vistula, and a helicopter crash scene as well.

The first Bollywood movie to be shot in Poland was Aamir Khan’s ‘Fanaa’ (Poland was shown as Kashmir in the movie). Fanaa had several scenes that were shot in Zakopane, Poland.

Fanaa mivie shot at zakopane, poland

Bollywood comedy movie ‘Bangistan’ (starring Riteish Deshmukh & Jacqueline Fernandez) was filmed in Krakow. Several Indian ad films (such as Yardley deodorant, Delishus biscuits, among others) have already been shot in Poland. Although Bhaag Milkha Bhaag (starring Farhan Akhtar) was NOT shot in this country, the post-production work of that movie was done in a Polish studio.

Poland wants to be the new Switzerland for Bollywood and is enticing Indian filmmakers through promotions, all kind of help, including incentives.

London’s Loss is Warsaw’s Gain

The part of the movie ‘Kick’ which was shot in Warsaw was originally planned to be shot in London, but because British authorities denied Salman Khan the necessary visa (because of the court cases against Salman Khan that were gaining attention in India back then), the shooting had to be moved to Warsaw in Poland.

Salman Khan (who seems to be hurt) is all praise for Poland and has since been recommending the place to others.

He finds Poland to be an extremely beautiful country and the city of Warsaw is like the place of his dreams. Salman feels Bollywood producers should opt for this country (to shoot films) as it offers all the required technical facilities. “Polish people are very understanding and friendly. I would love to come again and again even to chill out from my heavy commitments.’ Salman said.

Polish Calls on Bollywood to Film More Projects in Poland

Even before Bollywood filmmakers turned their attention towards Poland, their government had been requesting Bollywood to film more projects in Poland.

Their reasoning was that Bollywood can take advantage of Poland’s experienced film crew (with international experience on several big foreign projects) and in turn, Poland can benefit from the film tourism that Bollywood can deliver. Obviously, they wanted to emulate the success that ‘Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara’ had on Spain’s tourism.

We hope that there is more co-operation between India and Poland. A lot of agencies
from Poland are engaging with India as far as encouraging film shooting in Poland is concerned.

Professor Piotr Klodkowski, Polish Ambassador to India

Three institutions have been especially instrumental in bringing Indian moviemakers to Poland. In particular, The Polish Tourism Organization (Polska Organizacja Turystyki), Film Polska Productions, and Kraków Festival Office (Krakowskie Biuro Festiwalowe) have been instrumental in bringing Indian filmmakers to Poland.

In 2012, the Polish Tourism Organization started the “I like Poland” campaign, which focused on foreign tourist markets, including India (and its various film industries). As part of the program, the Polish Tourism Organization even offered a financial incentive to Salman’s movie ‘Kick’ to get them to shoot in Poland (and it seems to be paying them dividends now).

The good thing is that Bollywood has started taking note of Poland and several new productions are underway in that country.

Poland Tourism

Poland has got a truly fascinating history, great cultural heritage, and several areas of outstanding natural beauty. Must see places in Poland include Krakow, Warszawa, Gdansk, Częstochowa, Auschwitz, the Tatra mountains.

Warsaw is a world in itself, with an eastern European flavor, and was practically rebuilt from scratch after World War II (None of the Indian metros come even close to it). Today it has a vibrant business downtown with several skyscrapers (and ambitious plans to build more), although still dominated by the enormous Palace of Culture and Science.

Things to see in Warsaw include the beautiful Old Town, the Royal Route, the Chopin museum, several magnificent palaces and the former Jewish ghetto.

Top things to do and see, when in Poland:

 1. Main Market Square – Located in the Old Town in Krakow, this is the largest medieval town square in Europe and one of the main tourist attractions in Poland. The square is surrounded by historical townhouses, historic buildings, palaces and churches. The center of the square is dominated by the Renaissance style ‘Cloth Hall’.
 2. Warsaw Old Market Place – Warsaw’s central marketplace has been the heart of Polish culture for several centuries. The market square features a bronze sculpture of the Warsaw mermaid, the symbol of Poland’s capital.
 3. Gdansk Old Town – Includes several 17th century structures, including granaries, mills and churches.
 4. Bialowieza Forest – Located between the borders of Poland and Belarus, this forest is a large remnant of the primeval forests that once covered much of Europe, guided tours are available either on foot or in horse-drawn carriages.
 5. Wieliczka Salt Mine – Located on the outskirts of Krakow, the site features an underground city, all carved out of the rock salt, including a chapel that is said to have the best acoustics of any structure in Europe. Dozens of ancient sculptures carved from salt are augmented by new sculptures from contemporary artists.
 6. Malbork Castle – Built by the Teutonic Knights, the castle was expanded several time to host the growing number of Knights. Its one of the most popular tourist attraction in the city of Malbork.
 7. Slowinski Sand Dunes – Part of the Slowinski National Park located on the coast of the Baltic Sea. The forms of the dunes change with the season and are known as the “moving dunes.”
 8. Masurian Lakeland – More than 2,000 lakes connected by an extensive system of canals and rivers, its the most popular tourist destination of Europe’s lake districts.
 9. Auschwitz-Birkenau – Infamous Nazi concentration camp, a visit to this place is a powerful experience that words cannot describe.
 10. Wawel Castle – The Gothic castle is home to the only preserved piece of the Polish Crown Jewels, the legendary sword Szczerbiec coronation sword.

Young musicians in Saudi Arabia risking everything for music

For young musicians in Saudi Arabia, rocking and rolling can mean risking everything.

The last three years have seen an explosion in the kingdom’s underground music scene, with bands playing everything from hip-hop and rock to punk and death metal. There are currently more than 40 bands quietly rocking the nation, playing gigs in private homes, in residential compounds that house foreign workers and in tents in the middle of the vast Saudi desert.

But rocking in Riyadh and moshing in Mecca have their risks. The dreaded Mutaween — the Saudi religious police tasked with enforcing Shariah, the nation’s strict Islamic law, feel you have to suffer if you want to sing the blues. They’ve arrested band members for holding concerts without permits, and they’ve charged some concert organizers with money laundering, according to Saudi musicians and human rights organizations that monitor the oil-rich kingdom.

The threat to the Saudi regime isn’t the music itself, but rather the kingdom’s teenagers and young adults, who have grown up with computers, iPhones and satellite TVs, said human rights advocate Ali Alyami. Read more here…

Is It Okay to Play Piano in Saudi Arabia?

We all know that Dubai is the most liberal of all the Gulf / middle-east countries, but how is Saudi Arabia when it comes to music? Is it okay to play the Piano in Saudi Arabia?

Going by some of the threads and comments that we have read on the internet, it seems it is fine as long as you take care not to play it very loudly and disturb your neighbors.

What are your thoughts on this? If any of you have any experience, please share it here.

Answers
I think many Arabs consider it as Haram, so it is frowned upon. – Anonymous

But then there are stores that sell pianos, which I don’t think are illegal and seem to be the more legitimate ones. – Zep

I am keenly following this thread as I have recently come to Saudi, on my work assignment with a petrochemical company. I have been playing the piano for several years now and it has always been a stress buster for me. A Bach or Beethoven or another classical piece on the piano is the best form of relaxation for me. This is the first time I will be without my piano for a long time, and I’m actively searching for a dealer that has used pianos (I want a better one so that’s why not keen on a new one). And I think it’s okay to have one, at least that stays inside the house and used just for practicing. But I have not been able to locate any yet; I read the comment about importing from Dubai but I’m not sure if it’s possible, though it’s a good option if it doesn’t raise the price a lot by ways of import duties. – Chris

Mohammed Abdu is a well-known Saudi singer and composer of Khaleeji music (music of the gulf) and has performed all over, so music as such is not banned completely. Here’s one of his videos. – Anonymous

In Riyadh, there’s a music shop at Al Fasiliyah which has a good selection of guitars, keyboards and other musical instruments.

Meet Odpal Dejor George, the go-to person for filming in Ladakh, much sought after by Bollywood & other Indian filmmakers who want to shoot in Ladakh.

Talk about Bollywood and Ladakh, and the film that instantly comes to the mind is ‘3 Idiots’. Even though only the film’s climax was shot in Ladakh, people still clearly remember the Pangong Lake in Leh. The movie was indeed a blessing as Ladakh’s domestic tourism went up after the film was shot there.

Salman Khan’s film Tubelight was shot in Ladakh. In the title song of Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, you can see Farhan Akhtar running in the picturesque Nubra Valley.

However, without the help of Odpal Dejor George, it wouldn’t be possible for directors and ad filmmakers to shoot in Ladakh.

In the past, several films have been shot in Ladakh, where Ladakh has doubled for regions like Afghanistan or Tibet. The audience won’t know it was actually Ladakh.

But thanks to 3-Idiots, people can now identify the landscape. The movie was a blessing as people got to know what and where is Ladakh,” says George.

George has worked with filmmakers on 3 Idiots, Mirzya and Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, and several beverage and car commercials, helped them ensure a smooth shooting schedule. But despite working with some of the biggest names in Bollywood, George ensures privacy for the stars as he wants them to work comfortably, and maintain a healthy and fun work environment.

But how did he get into the movie business?

George quit his travel agency job in Delhi in 2001, and was ready to move back to Ladakh to launch his own travel company. That was when he heard that filmmaker J P Dutta was looking for someone to help him with the shooting of his film LOC Kargil in Ladakh. Even though George had no prior experience in film production, he was determined to give it a try. George managed to meet JP Dutta.

“I still remember, I didn’t have the money to fly to Leh and I was still in Delhi, trying to collect money from my friends. We got a computer on rent, just to show J P Dutta that I have a proper office.” The office must have made an impression because the film crew agreed to give him the work and then there was no looking back for him.

Mr. Dutta also gave him some valuable advice that helped him get more offers from film-makers.

“Earlier, I used to run away from film sets after I had arranged everything for the crew. I found it very boring. But J P Dutta took to me for the shoot one day and told me ‘You need to know about what goes behind shooting a movie. You’ll get more offers soon from filmmakers’,” says George.

Challenges faced…

 • Leh is overcrowded during the peak season (April to July for domestic tourists and July to September it is a mix of Indian and foreign tourists). With this boom in tourism, number of vehicles on the road have increased. Today, traffic jams are common in Ladakh.
 • The amount of garbage being disposed in Ladakh has increased significantly. You will find garbage in popular tourists spots like Pangong.
 • However, with rising popularity of Ladakh, George’s competition has also grown. “We have bought equipment that helps in shootings so that movie crew don’t have to carry heavy equipment from Mumbai. With other players, it has become even easier because we share this equipment as and when required. We never refuse anyone just because they are competition. Basically, we try to help each other,” George says.

In 2013, George set up Saboo Resorts, and now spends most of his time managing the property, besides helping filmmakers with their shoots.

Films nominated at the Oscars can influence your travel plans, says online travel site lastminute.com.

Brands and tourism companies are advised to keep an eye on the big screen, to cash in on ‘movie tourism’ – travel inspired by films – as films nominated at the Oscars could prompt people to plan their next trip. Its a perfect opportunity for brands/tourism companies to target lucrative travel audiences..

“Awards season may not be the most obvious travel trigger, but it offers the opportunity for brands to target by passion. From film buffs to sporadic cinema goers, films have the power to ignite a little travel passion in all of us – which can drive us to do exciting and unexpected things – and it’s not just travel brands that can benefit from the desire to get away. Smart advertisers can tap into this passion and offer inspiration at every stage of the booking journey, from where to stay to how to nail the latest LA look,” says Alessandra Di Lorenzo, Chief Commercial Officer, Advertising and Partnerships, at lastminute.com group.

Here are some of the findings shared by lastminute.com:

 • LaLa Land was filmed in Los Angeles. Searches for flights to Los Angeles shot up by 21% on the day of the LA-set musical’s release, compared to the week before. Also Read: Bollywood filmmakers and celebrities predict winners for Oscars
 • Martin Scorsese’s latest masterpiece Silence (set in 17th Century Japan) saw a jump of 82% in travel searches for flights to Japan on the day it was released, compared to the week before, and rising a further 46% in the subsequent two days.

 • Overlooked for nominations in the Oscars, Hunt for the Wilderpeople, the Kiwi classic, drove consumers to research New Zealand in big numbers, with searches for flights to Auckland site rocketing by 60% in the four days after the film’s release.
 • Besides film destinations, searches for ski holiday flights also saw an increase after the release of Eddie the Eagle, the comedy tribute to British skier Eddie.

For decades, Indian filmmakers have been coming to Switzerland to film various towns and villages (like Gstaad) as the backdrop to their elaborate dream sequences. And over the years, film fans have followed too.

But it seems Switzerland is a favorite destination of celebrities as well, as many of them flock to this place during winters (especially Christmas to New Year period) to chill (literally). On New Year’s eve recently Varun Dhawal took off to the Swiss alps with Natasha Dalal, and bumped into many known faces. First he Karisma and Kareena and bumbed into Virushka.

Every winter Kareena Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan spend time in Switzerland, especially in Gstaad where they own a house as well.

The National Museum of Indian Cinema (NMIC), located in Mumbai, celebrates Bollywood as well as Indian cinema. It boasts of stacks of memorabilia, recordings and film-making tools.

The government-funded museum, housed in a 19th-century bungalow in south Mumbai, traces the film industry’s journey since the days of silent black-and-white films to the current colourful blockbusters (period of over 100 years).

The museum hosts replicas of the Mutoscope, the camera used by the Lumiere Brothers, and the Praxinoscope — a spinning cylindrical animation device invented in France in the 1870s.

Cameras at NMIC

Here are few more highlights of the museum.

 • Fans can learn about India’s first full-length feature film, the 1913 Dadasaheb Phalke-directed Raja Harishchandra
 • Listen to recordings of K. L. Saigal, considered the first superstar of Hindi-language cinema
 • View hand-painted movie posters (including that of Pather Panchali – Satyajit Ray’s 1955 hit film)
 • Take selfies beside a statue of Bollywood icon Raj Kapoor.
 • The museum also celebrates films from other regions in India.

Cine lovers in Odisha and Odisha film artistes are upset (with Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting) that no posters or information regarding Odia films has been displayed at the National Museum of Indian Cinema (NMIC) in Mumbai.

“It is sad to know that Odia cinema has found no place in the museum. The poster of first Odia film ‘Seeta Vivah’ made in 1936 has not been displayed which clearly shows that our cinema has been completely ignored and neglected.”

What you will not find…

The last remaining print of India’s first “talkie”, the 1931 Alam Ara (The Light of the World), was destroyed in a fire in 2003.

India today produces close to 1500 films a year, and is the biggest producer of movies in the world.

The movie ‘Joker’ has taken the world by storm, and it has also helped create a new tourist attraction in the Bronx.

There are several memorable scenes in the movie, but one scene that has been shared widely is the famous stairs scene where Joaquin Phoenix (the lead actor) comes dancing down after having completely transformed. That staircase, where Arthur Fleck (Phoenix’s character) breaks into his devilish dance, is now turning out to be a famous tourist spot in New York City.

Here is the JOKER Stairs Dancing Scene

These stairs in New York City connect the Shakespeare and Anderson Avenues at West 167th Street in the Bronx. Even though the stairs have been around for years and lead to some of the most famous spots in New York, like the Yankee Stadium, the Bronx Zoo and the New York Botanical Garden, they were never really popular because of their association with a crime in the area.

People have identified the location from the scene and are now visiting the spot, with some of them recreating Joker’s steps on it.

The iconic suspension bridge Lakshman Jhula in Rishikesh has been shut down by the Uttarakhand government as safety reports by Public Works Department (PWD) suggested that the bridge was in bad condition and could not “sustain more traffic in its present state”. The development is likely to have an impact on television shows, ad films and even Bollywood films as the bridge is a popular shooting locations.

Built in 1923 over the Ganga river, Lakshman Jhula is an iconic landmark in Rishikesh (renowned for studying yoga and meditation). The bridge connects Tapovan village in Tehri district with Jonk in Pauri district. The bridge is named after Lakshman (younger brother of Lord Rama in Hindu mythology) as it stands at the location he is said to have crossed the river with the help of jute ropes.

Popular films shot at this location:

 • Shahid kapoor’s Batti Gul Meter Chalu
 • Sonu ke Titu ki Sweety
 • Ayushmann Khurrana’s Dum Laga Ke Haisha
 • Amitabh Bachchan’s film Ganga Ki Saugand (1978)

Sanjay Leela Bhansali is planning to shoot his film Inshallah, starring Salman Khan and Alia Bhatt, in Rishikesh, Haridwar and Uttarkashi, but this is one location where they cannot shoot now.

Such was the popularity of Lakshman Jhula among line producers that directors instruct them to to pick spots from where the bridge is visible, even if the scene doesn’t demand shooting on the bridgge itself. So if they are shooting in the ghats, or in a restaurant nearby, the director would shoot in such an angle so that the Lakshman Jhula would be visible. “Once the audience sees the bridge, they know it is Rishikesh,” a Rishikesh-based line producer.

Rules were flouted openly, say producers

The authorities, despite being aware about the condition of the bridge, never checked the film shoots to see if rules were flouted. They would give the permission (needed from multiple authorities) to shoot on the bridge, but never really checked if rules were being followed, as per this report.

“Whenever we took permission to shoot at Lakshman Jhula, we were told to not allow more than 50 people together on it. But there was no way we could shoot with only 50 people. To shoot any sequence, we obviously need not just actors but the crew, the supporting cast and the support vehicles,” says a Delhi-based line producer who was a part of the Dum Laga Ke Haisha shoot at Lakshman Jhula.

“During the shooting of Dum Laga Ke Haisha, we had to put 20-30 dancers on the suspension bridge, which was against the rules. But, we took liberty during the shooting, and in most cases, this is unavoidable. It’s the similar case with all song sequences shot on the bridge,” says another Delhi-based line producer.

“Riding a bike is not allowed on Lakshman Jhula, but the rule was flouted blatantly for multiple ad campaign shoots,” says another line producer.

Shooting-related queries from Indian as well as international production houses in Rishikesh are usually for Lakshman Jhula and Ganga ghat. Filmmakers cam still shoot on a bridge in Rishikesh, but it will be at Lakshman Jhula’s twin bridge Ram Jhula, which is just a few kilometres away. It is not as popular as Lakshman Jhula, but filmmakers don’t have an option now.

We really hope that in future the authorities take the required precautions to keep important monuments safe.

Indian cinema, including Bollywood, has a huge following in SriLanka, with Hindi films being shown in theatres throughout the year, and at least one movie shown on local television almost every day. With normalcy prevailing in this country, people of this emerald island are now enjoying their favorite Hindi movies, and the SriLankan government is also encouraging Indian film-makers to shoot in their country.

SriLanka has got some beautiful scenic spots, lot of Hollywood movies have already been shot here, and slowly, Bollywood filmmakers are taking note of this island country. It also offers other advantages such as lower production costs compared to other countries.

Sri Lanka is home to some of the finest beaches in the world, and being so close to India, its definitely a must-visit destination if you’re a water baby.

Bollywood actress Jacqueline Fernandez promotes Sri Lanka tourism

After the recent bomb blasts in Sri lanka, tourism in Sri Lanka has taken a hit.

Sri Lanka Tourism recently unveiled several special promotional packages for Indians with a guest appearance by Sri Lankan-born Bollywood actress Jacqueline Fernandez in order to boost its tourism industry.

Jacqueline said despite the terror attacks, Sri Lanka is still a paradise isle and safe to travel to and urged the Indian tourists to visit the country. “Sri Lanka is absolutely safe to go back right now. And we really would love your support for Sri Lanka,” said Jacqueline.

Jacqueline Fernandez is originally from SriLanka. The Sri Lankan beauty who shot into the limelight with ‘Murder 2’ has also worked in a Sri Lankan Film named ‘According to Mathew’.

The war scenes in “Madras Cafe” were NOT shot in SriLanka, but were recreated in Tamil Nadu and Kerala.

Maanyata (Sanjay) Dutt’s beach holiday with kids in Sri Lanka

Maanyata Dutt has always been a pillar of strength for Sanjay Dutt, she also makes sure that she spends quality time with the two kids (in case Sanju Baba is busy with his shoots).

Maanyata loves beaches, which became apparent, when she posted pictures from her long holiday in Sri Lanka. Unfortunately, Sanjay Dutt could not join them because of some professional reasons. But that did not deter Maanyata and their twins from having a blast.

Sri Lanka invites filmmakers to shoot at its filming locations

Several Bollywood and Hollywood movies have been filmed in Sri Lanka in the past, but the country wants to attract more filmmakers (from around the world).

Blessed with all the natural wonders (and diversity), captivating landscapes, representatives of Sri Lanka Tourism often attend International Film Tourism meets to showcase their scenic locations to filmmakers from across the world.

“Sri Lanka Tourism” even plans to organise location familiarisation tour programs for select high-profile film directors and producers from the Indian film industry (those are the perks of being a top filmmaker).

Another advantage that works in favour of Sri Lanka is that the country is located near to India, is well connected by flights (and sea). There are frequent flights from major Indian cities like Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Trivandrum and New Delhi to Colombo.

Its easy to obtain the visas and necessary permissions (to shoot) in Sri Lanka, the locals are friendly, and many of them speak English (and Tamil).

Sri Lanka is also home to professionally managed film location service companies that are run by experienced film personalities — like Hollywood Director Chandran Rutnam and veteran actor Ravindra Randeniya. These companies not only have modern equipment but also trained hands with experience of working for European and Hollywood production teams.

Sri Lanka Tourism

Sri Lanka offers one of the best valued destination for holidays. Its tourism industry did take a nosedive because of its long internal conflict, however, after the end of the conflict in 2009, the tourism industry has again started booming.

Sri Lanka is an authentic tourism destination, the diversity of things to see is unparalleled, and the best part is that the island is compact allowing you to travel the length and breadth of the country within a few days.

 • Marco Polo (explorer of the 12th century) wrote that Sri Lanka is the finest island in the whole world.
 • Academy Award-winning “The Bridge on the River Kwai” was filmed in Kitulgala in Sri Lanka.
