The country has hosted several Hollywood and Bollywood events and film festivals and a few Hollywood films have also been shot in Saudi. However, it’s only recently that Bollywood has shot its first film, which is filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani and SRK’s first collaboration ‘Dunki’.

A portion of the film was shot at Neom in Saudi Arabia; the announcement was made at the Red Sea International Film Festival in Jeddah.

Nearby cities like Abu Dhabi and Dubai in UAE are strong competitors and a favourite spot for Hollywood filmmakers, and Saudi is keen to attract more filmmakers to their country.

The country has several beautiful, unexplored locations which will be a treat to watch for the audience.

Saudi Arabia plans luxury travel destinations along Red Sea to attract foreign tourists

Saudi Arabia is keen to place itself on the “international tourism map”, and plans luxury travel destinations along the Red Sea coast, but will foreign tourists still flock to Saudi Arabia?

Saudi Arabia is making a play to put itself on the “international tourism map,” the Telegraph reports.

According to Bloomberg, Saudi Arabia plans to build luxury resorts on more than 13,000 square miles of Red Sea coastline, including “50 untouched natural islands”, with the intention of making the country’s economy less reliant on oil.

The goal of the project is to attract 1 million “luxury travelers from around the globe” per year by 2035.

But why would foreign tourists want to go to a place where there so many restrictions?

Alcohol, movie theaters, and plays are banned, women are required to wear full-length robes in public, and there are limits on men and women mixing — all these restrictions defeats the purpose of a vacation for most travelers.

However, it seems there will be “semi-autonomous” zones where laws might be relaxed (more like the United Arab Emirates), although its unclear as of now exactly which laws will be relaxed at the resorts.

If Saudi Arabia wants to attract a large number of foreign tourists, they will need to relax certain rules. “If you can’t change restrictions on alcohol and dress, that market disappears,” says one tourism expert.

The ‘Golden Temple’ in Amritsar (in Punjab, India) is the holiest Gurdwara for Sikhs. It was founded in 1574 by the fourth Sikh guru, Guru Ram Das and its real name is Sri Harmandir Sahib (also Sri Darbar Sahib).

If you have never visited the temple, then you may probably may not be aware that the Golden Temple is actually just a small part of the huge gurdwara complex.

Besides the temple, the other main attraction is the ‘Amrit Sarovar’, the tank that surrounds the main shrine. In fact, the city Amritsar takes its name from the ‘Amrit Sarovar’. Pilgrims believe that the tank’s water has healing powers; people from all over the world come to take a dip in the sacred waters.

The architecture of the Golden Temple is a beautiful blend of Hindu and Islamic architectural styles, The second level of the structure is engraved in gold panels, and topped by a dome gilded with 750kg of gold.

In the gleaming inner sanctum (photography is strictly prohibited), priests and musicians keep up a continuous chant from the Guru Granth Sahib (the Sikh holy book), adding to the already intense atmosphere.

Indira Gandhi, the 4th Prime Minister of India, was assassinated on 31 October 1984, by her bodyguards, in the aftermath of ‘Operation Blue Star’, the Indian Army’s June 1984 assault on the Golden Temple in Amritsar which left the Sikh temple heavily damaged. The building was repaired by the government but Sikhs refused to use the tainted building and rebuilt the tower from scratch.

Inside the compound, there’s also the Sikh Museum that depicts the persecution suffered by the Sikhs at the hands of Mughals, the British and even Indira Gandhi.

Another important structure is the Ramgarhia Bunga, a protective fortress topped by two Islamic-style minarets; inside is a stone slab once used for Mughal coronations, seized from Delhi by Ranjit Singh in 1783.

An angry Hrithik Roshan tweetes “Dear Tommy, I don’t wear you, neither do my kids endorse you. If you have lost your spine, I have a great team to help you find it. Please (Hil)figure yourself out.”

The advert shows Hrithik, with sons Hrehaan and Hridhaan, dressed in matching outfits. The advert is captioned “Adorable Hrehaan and Hridaan Roshan in Tommy Hilfiger Kids”.

Several Bollywood films like Race 3, Tiger Zinda Hai, Dishoom, Baby and Bang Bang have been shot in Abu Dhabi, the capital city of UAE.

When it comes to shooting films in the UAE, filmmakers have always preferred the stylish and swankier Dubai over cultural Abu Dhabi. However, production houses are now keen to explore Abu Dhabi as well, and this place is fast emerging as the “new big thing” in Middle Eastern film locations.

In recent times, the emirate has managed to attract several big ticket Hollywood productions, thanks to the efforts of the Abu Dhabi Film Commission.

While Maryam Eid AlMheiri, CEO of Abu Dhabi’s Media Zone Authority, is happy that Hollywood films are being shot in Abu Dhabi, he believes one film, or one scene from a film, does not make an industry. “If we want to build a sustainable economy around film production … it’s not about one movie a year.”

That is why AlMheiri calls the 65-day shoot of 2017 Bollywood hit “Tiger Zinda Hai” (starring Indian superstar Salman Khan) as a turning point. Now, Abu Dhabi is becoming a prime destination to shoot Bollywood blockbusters (its 30% rebate on production spending and other perks also helps in getting them to Abu Dhabi).

The country has fine weather, is safe, has several exotic monuments, offers Middle Eastern scenery; Film makers can use the seascape, desert and ultra-modern urban setting of Abu Dhabi.

Abu Dhabi is becoming a favorite with Bollywood filmmakers. “Abu Dhabi gives the feeling of having the most beautiful aspects of the Middle East — you’ve got sand, blue skies, the coast and many other requirements that make a good film. You have people who are coming here because they just see it as a great place to make movies, ” says Sajid Nadiadwala.

Meanwhile, AlMheiri is keen to capitalize on the new-found fascination for Abu Dhabi. Plans are under way to build a twofour54 Studio City complex in the city’s Mina Zayed waterfront area.

The fight sequence for the movie Dishoom (John Abraham, Varun Dhawan, Jacqueline Fernandez, Akshaye Khanna) was filmed a small speedboat, with the Abu Dhabi Corniche skyline in the background. The Corniche (or Corniche Road) is a popular attraction in Abu Dhabi, it forms a sweeping curve on the western side of the main Abu Dhabi island and is full of cycle paths, fountains and park areas.

The boats were provided by Abu Dhabi boat-tour operators Xventures, who ferried the cast and crew on and off Abu Dhabi’s luxurious Nurai Island, for scenes that were shot there.

Some scenes of the movie were also filmed at at Emirates Palace Marina.

Dam 99 (2011), Dil Vil Pyar Vyar (2002) are some of the Bollywood films that have been shot in Abu Dhabi. Many more South Indian films have already been shot here.

Recently, Bollywood Film ‘Bang Bang’ (starring Hrithik Roshan and Katrina Kaif) completed its Abu Dhabi shoot (Corniche, Liwa oasis, Hyatt Capital Gate Hotel, Qasr al Sarab, Emirates Palace and Yas Island). The movie is slated for release towards the end of the year. Bang Bang did avail the 30 percent production rebate (offered in the emirate) and also used the production services of local film and television service provider.

Director Priyadarshan will also be shooting his next film in Abu Dhabi. The movie called ‘The Arabian, the Camel and Madhavan Nair,’ will star actors Mohanlal, Laxmi Rai and Bhavana.

Akshay Kumar also intends to shoot partly in Abu Dhabi for his upcoming film ‘Baby’.
