The iconic Burj Khalifa, located in Dubai, is currently the world’s tallest building. However, that credit will soon go to another building that is coming up in Dubai. Emaar Properties are currently building a tower that is going to be “a notch” taller than the Burj Khalifa.
‘The Tower’ (name of the new structure) is being built as part of the redevelopment of the heart of old Dubai, and will be built by the same developers that constructed the Burj Khalifa.
The project will cost $1bn and is scheduled for completion in 2020 (for the Dubai Expo trade fair). The new tower will also have observation decks and restaurants.
The Tower’s upper observation decks are modeled after the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world.

However, the way the new tower is designed, many feel that it is unlikely to be widely recognized as a taller “building” than the Burj Khalifa (even if it surpasses it in height by a few metres).
The Emaar-built Burj Khalifa stands at 828m, but is expected to be overtaken by the 1km-high (0.6 mile) Kingdom Tower coming up in Jeddah (Saudi Arabia), which will make it the world’s tallest building (in 2020).
