While its common in Hollywood films to see several heroes come together in a film (Avengers, Oceans series), Bollywood seems to be happy with two-hero buddy films (and of-course the audience too loves to see their ‘Bromance’ on screen).
Bollywood loves the two-hero formula (and so does the audience); the theme has been seen umpteen times in Indian movies (in action thrillers and comedies). Dishoom (John Abraham & Varun Dhawan) is the latest buddy film where two men of different temperaments end up working together for a mission.
While there are several movies on this theme, here we take a look at the top ‘Buddy’ two-hero movies in Hindi movies.
Munnabhai series: Raju Hirani’s comedy series had Sanjay Dutt and Arshad Warsi as the lead actors, and together they created havoc onscreen. All of Raju Hirani’s movies have good social messages (blended with comedy).
Sholay (1975): The all-time blockbuster in the history on Indian cinema (directed by Ramesh Sippy), touched all kinds of emotions. And although there were other stalwarts in the movie, the movie was pretty much about Jai and Veeru (Amitabh Bachchan and Dharmendra).
Andaz Apna Apna (1994): This movie makes you laugh even today, when it comes up on television. Director Rajkumar Santoshi’s classic comedy had Aamir Khan and Salman Khan paired together (they are huge stars today and propbably impossibleto get them to pair together). There were several other supporting actors in important roles.
Dostana (2008): The romantic comedy featuring Abhishek Bachchan and John Abraham (and Priyanka Chopra) was one of the earliest takes on homosexuality.
Karan Arjun (1995): Rakesh Roshan’s rebirth saga had Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan in lead roles (they were not huge stars then), playing sons to Raakhee. I guess its impossible to get these two superstars to act together in a film (considering they fought with each other).
Main Khiladi Tu Anari (1994): Akshay Kumar and Saif Ali Khan did several films together in the 1990s. This one was one of them.
Deewana Mastana (1997):
Directed by David Dhawan, Deewana Mastana was a romantic comedy which had Anil Kapoor as a crook (supported by Johny Lever) and Govnda as an innocent person (named Bunnu), and both are trying to woo Juhi Chawla.
Andar Baahar (1984): This one had Jackie Shroff playing a strict police officer and Anil Kapoor played the wisecracking tapori. Jackie and Anil worked in several films at that time.
Here are a few more, where the two lead actors were brothers:
Ram Lakhan (1989): Jackie Shroff and Anil Kapoor played brothers (instead of buddies) in Subhash Ghai’s blockbuster drama, co-starring Raakhee, Dimple Kapadia and Madhuri Dixit.
Haseena Maan Jaayegi (1999): David Dhawan directed comedy had Sanjay Dutt and Govinda in the lead.
Here are the classics:
Deewaar (1975): Yash Chopra’s classic movie (crime drama) where Amitabh Bachchan played a negative character (established Bachchan as the angry, young man of the 1970s) and Shashi Kapoor is a honest inspector.
Anand (1971): Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s classic had Rajesh Khanna (played a spirited young man counting days to his death) and Amitabh Bachchan (his doctor friend). The film won several awards. Rajesh Khanna was a superstar then while Big B was a newcomer in the industry.
