There are lot of times, especially after watching a crap movie, when we feel that we should have got our money back, because the trailer promised to be a totally different movie.
While no one has moved court for such reasons, in the case of the movie ‘Fan’, people really felt cheated when the hit track ‘Jabra Fan’ was not included in the movie, although it was used quite extensively for the movies promotion.
However, this time, a woman decided to move court, and eventually got the court to rule in her favour.
Afreen Zaidi, a teacher from Aurangabad moved district consumer forum last year to file a complaint against the makers of Shah Rukh Khan’s 2016 film, Fan. She felt it was unfair on the makers’ part to promote the movie with the track Jabra Fan, which was not part of the film.
However, her plea was dismissed on the grounds that there was no direct relation between the complainant and respondent as consumer and service provider.
However, earlier this month, the Aurangabad circuit bench of the Maharashtra State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission felt that her complaint was justified, and have ordered the film producers, Yash Raj Films, to compensate Rs 15,000 to Zaidi — Rs 10,000 for mental harassment and Rs 5,000 as cost of the complaint.
Now that is some good news for consumers. We wish more people take such steps in the future so that filmmakers don’t take the audience for granted.
