The growth of Bollywood is difficult to miss & ignore, even for the established artistes abroad. Several foreign artistes have already worked in Bollywood and many more are in India to explore better opportunities, and now its the turn of Italian opera singer Gioconda to make her mark in the Hindi film industry.

Italian singer Gioconda Vessichelli has sung in opera houses around the world and now she’s all set to rock India. She has already sung the number “Touch Opera” in the Bollywood film Prague. Gioconda is among the select artistes in the world who have done a fusion of opera and Indian music.
She has already won hearts in India by her singing prowess; she was last seen at the Lavasa International Festival where she won hearts by singing the popular Raj Kapoor song “Pyaar Hua Iqraar Hua” in opera style.

Gioconda may be known for her singing skills, but she also happens to be a great actress. Although she is focusing on her singing career currently, she’s open to doing movies provided the right project, with the right directors comes her way.
By the way, she’s already receiving offers in Bollywood for movies as well. But she’s not in a hurry and is taking her own sweet time. She wants to make sure that her career movies are correct and will help her in the long run!

Here are excerpts from one of her recent interviews:
When did you realise you were interested in music?
I think I was born singing, not crying (smiles). Even as a child, my favourite pastime would be pretending to be a singer. When I was 12 years old, I heard Maria Callas and I felt hypnotised by her beautiful voice. So I started singing not only in pop, but also in an opera voice. I started my career when I was just 16 years old. I was the youngest soprano working in the theatre with colleagues who were 50 years old!
Can you tell us about some of the work you have done with the Indian music composers?
I have recorded Italian versions of four of Salim Sulaiman’s songs with a blend of opera. Leslie Lewis has written a beautiful song especially for me. It will be used in a Bollywood movie. Apart from that, a CD and video is in production now.
If an acting offer comes your way from Bollywood, would you take it up?
I did receive a few proposals to act and model earlier but I was too busy focussing on my music. But I think if a director proposes a story that resonates with me, then I would think of taking it up. Besides, I’m a ‘parachuter’. I like jumping into new things (smiles). Read more here…
