For that you need to have a look at its origin. The Cannes Film Festival was created in 1939 to compete and counteract the film event designed by Mussolini: The Venezia Festival. Artists did not like the Venezia Festival because it was the source of political propaganda of Mussolini’s Government. On the contrary, the Cannes Film festival was popular right from the beginning because it represented the essence of being neutral, as any art has to be.
