Kajol, who’s busy promoting her upcoming film ‘Dilwale’, recently confirmed (and has always been frank about it) that Shahrukh Khan and Ajay Devgn are not the best of friends, but she also clarified that they are not enemies as well. We go back in time to see why SRK and Ajay Devgn could never share a warm bond with one another (coincidentally, even Ajay Devgn has worked in a Bollywood film titled ‘Dilwale’ years back.)
Everybody remembers the infamous fight between SRK and Salman Khan, but very few know that SRK and Ajay Devgn have always maintain a dignified distance from one another, and also were avoiding each other for a very long time, and very few know the real reasons for the cold-war between the two.
In recent times, SRK has been trying to extend an olive branch to all those with whom he had a tiff in the past, including Ajay Devgn. And that is why every-time Shahrukh and Ajay Devgn talk to each other, it makes headlines. Recently the two actors were spotted having dinner together, when they were in Bulgaria. Sources close to the actors say that director Rohit Shetty was trying hard to get Ajay devgn to do a cameo for his forthcoming film ‘Dilwale’, that features SRK and Kajol (the pair responsible for several Bollywood blockbusters), however it didn’t materialize.
So what exactly went wrong between SRK and Ajay Devgn? How did the fight begin?
Son of Sardaar vs Jab Tak Hai Jaan
Many think that it started when Ajay’s “Son of Sardaar” (SOS) and SRK’s “Jab Tak Hai Jaan” (JTHJ) were released in 2012 at the same time. Ajay was unable to get sufficient screens for his release as most screens were already blocked by Yashraj for SRK’s film.
Back then, Devgn had filed a complaint against Yash Raj Films with Competition Commission of India (CCI) over the number of screens allotted to “JTHJ”. The dispute did affect the relationship between SRK and Devgn.
However, it seems, the real reason for their cold war started long back.
Ajay Devgn – SRK Rift Started Long Back
Although Ajay Devgn and Kajol were Bollywood’s strongest couples, they could not create magic together on celluloid. On the other hand, in all their films together, Shah Rukh Khan with Kajol is just incredible chemistry! Its believed that Ajay could not digest this, from where the problem started. Here we go back in time to see how it all started.
Kajol and Ajay….Beginning of their relationship
Kajol was only 18 when she entered Bollywood and caught everyone’s attention. Even though her debut film ‘Bekhudi’ flopped, directors could see her enormous potential and Kajol kept on getting lead roles. Kajol first did the film ‘Hulchul’ with Ajay Devgn, then followed ‘Gundaraj’, and soon after, Ajay & Kajol started dating. It came as a surprise to many, because they both had such contrasting personalities. So even though, Gundaraj and Hulchul flopped, everyone was talking about their new relationship.
SRK steals the show
When Shah Rukh Khan was paired opposite Kajol the in Baazigar, the movie became a super-hit. Filmmakers signed them on for more films. Their next film ‘Karan Arjun’ was also a huge hit. And then followed ‘Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge’ which transformed ‘SRK-Kajol’ into the most famous onscreen couple. Their onscreen chemistry obviously set tongues wagging at parties and award functions.
Ajay started feeling insecure
After SRK-Kajol gave three big hits, people were talking less about Kajol-Ajay and more about SRK-Kajol. Ajay, whose career was anyways not going great at that time, started feeling insecure because everybody was talking about the chemistry that SRK shared with Kajol (whom Ajay was dating at that time). On his part, Shah Rukh maintained that Kajol was more like his sister which is why they were so comfortable with each other. And even though there was not even a whiff of an affair between them, Ajay took the entire thing very badly.
No Shah Rukh For Kajol
Ajay, unable to come to terms with his girlfriend’s friendship with Shahrukh, laid down a strict condition for Kajol – that she could not work with SRK anymore. Kajol, who was deeply in love with Ajay, agreed and started refusing films with Shah Rukh. However, the embargo didn’t last for long.
Karan Johar’s ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ offered Kajol another opportunity to work with SRK. The headstrong Kajol felt that the role was too good to decline and she decided to go against her boyfriend Ajay Devgn’s wishes. guess what? The film went on to become another box office blockbuster!
Kudos to Kajol for standing by her man
Kajol’s fans and filmmakers were disappointed that she was quitting films at the peak of her popularity, but Kajol didn’t care as her personal life was more important to her than films. Kajol stood firmly by her man during the controversy, and also tied the knot with Ajay Devgn (married on February 24, 1999).
Wedding revealed that all was not well between SRK and Ajay
Sadly for Kajol, even immediately after her wedding, tongues were wagging about Shah Rukh’s equation with Ajay.
This is because, despite being invited for the wedding, SRK didn’t make it for the main wedding ceremony. On the other hand, SRK attended all the functions that were held at Kajol’s house!
All Is Well that Ends Well
Fortunately, for all the three stars, the worst seems to be far behind, with SRK and Ajay seen together on several occasions in recent times. Ajay Devgn today is a much bigger star (almost in the league with the Khans) and more at peace with himself. And that is why Ajay may also play a small role in SRK’s upcoming film with Kajol.
